Code Blue Emergency Declared for the Weekend

Temperatures are expected to dip into the twenties and teens over the next several days.

This release was sent in by the Montgomery County Department of Health. The Montgomery County Commissioners, on the advice of the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety, have declared a Code Blue Cold Weather Emergency for Montgomery County based on a review of forecasts from the National Weather Service. The Code Blue Declaration has been issued for Montgomery County for the period beginning at 6:00PM on Thursday, December 27, 2012 until 6:00PM on Monday, December 31, 2012. A Code Blue Cold Weather declaration is made in Montgomery County when winter conditions pose a threat of serious harm or death to individuals without shelter.  A Code Blue is called when the combination of air temperature and wind chill is anticipated to be …

Montco Urges Flu Preparedness

The Montgomery County Health Department has scheduled several area flu vaccine clinics.

As the 2012-13 flu season gears up, Montgomery County Health Department (MCHD) plans flu vaccine clinics throughout the county. Flu shots are free for Montgomery County residents, and will be available while supplies last. Clinic dates and locations include: Clinics are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., except at Upper Merion, which is from 3 to 6 p.m. Medicare-eligible residents should bring their Medicare cards. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months and older gets a flu shot as soon as it's available. It takes about two weeks for antibodies to develop and provide protection against the flu. Cases of West Nile virus Found throughout Montgomery County

According to Montco Board of Commissioners chair, Josh Shapiro, the best way of avoiding West Nile Virus is by eliminating its source's breeding grounds.

Since surveillance testing has indicated West Nile virus (WNV) activity is present throughout the county, the Montgomery County Health Department wants to remind residents that the risk of WNV is strong and may remain so for some time this season, thus the focus should be on personal protection. There have been 75 mosquito pools which tested positive for WNV so far this season, compared to 31 positive pools during the same period last year. The first positive test was reported on May 17 this year, compared to June 9 last year.  A mosquito pool is a collection of mosquitoes (usually about 50) of any given species or group (i.e. Culex mosquitoes) that are likely to carry/transmit a virus. WNV is transmitted to people by infected mosquitoes…
