Students Kick Off Greenfield Youth Film Fez

The winning films will air at the Keswick Theater in May.

"Since I was 11 years old I have always had a passion for entertaining a crowd," said Upper Dublin High School student Justin Asaraf. "After my first picture camera, I started to envision life as one big movie." Justin is one of 350 high school students from around the region who gathered at Montgomery County Community College last week for the kick off of the 2012 Greenfield Youth Film Festival. Now in its fourth year, the GYFF gives students from area schools a chance to pursue their passion for filmmaking using some of the industry's top technology and instruction; it began with an all-day workshop at the college on Jan. 11. Abington Represents, Wins at Greenfield Film Fez

The prestigious festival had its most successful year yet.

The stars of the future were out Wednesday, May 4, at the Keswick Theatre, as over 200 student filmmakers, friends, family, teachers and fans packed the house for the 2011 Greenfield Youth Film Festival. The festival, funded by the Greenfield Foundation, is a months-long process in which students from area high schools think up, create and submit short films. It all culminated on May 4, when the winning films were revealed and premiered. The festival began three years ago, and has doubled in size every year since. “The first year, we had five schools; the second year, we had 10 schools; and this year, we had 20 schools participating,” said Jill Greenfield Feldman, administrator for the Greenfield Foundation. “We brought in almost 200 films…

Moms Q&A — Looking for some Local Theater

Need some theater but don't want to head downtown?

It’s that time of week once again for a little Mom Talk. Patch takes the chance to inform our readers: moms, dads, grandparents and family friends alike, to inform you each week of something new. This week, we take a question from a reader in Norristown.  Dear Patch: I want my kids to have a little bit of culture in their lives. I don’t think they are quite ready for a Broadway show, but I’d love to work more live theater into their routine. Do you know of any good spots in Montgomery County to have them experience that? I feel like a trip downtown might be too much, and at their ages (6 and 10), I am not sure what levels would be best. Any suggestions? Sincerely, Janet M., of Norristown   Thanks, Janet for the question. There are a number…

Art, music and Socrates are featured in this week's 'Get Out.'

We got a taste of spring last week, but the snow and cold temperatures have returned in full force —and cabin fever has reached epidemic levels! Here are some ideas for things to do to get you out of the house.   1. Multicultural Film Series Where/When: Montgomery County Community College, 340 Dekalb Pike, Blue Bell; Feb. 25, 8 p.m. Why go: Featuring films that present a historical and cultural perspective on the gay and lesbian experience, the college’s Multicultural Film Series will screen Deepa Mehta’s “Fire” Feb. 25. The 1996 Hindi film has subtitles and explores the relationship between two women born of their confinement by social expectations. Pricing: $5   2. Socrates Café Where/When: Abington Library, 1030 Old York Road, Abington…
