President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice presidential running mate, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. Democratic Montgomery County Commissioners Josh Shapiro, Leslie Richards, and their Republican colleague Bruce Castor said Tuesday afternoon that Election Day in the county is proceeding smoothly. The commissioners were visiting a polling location at the Whitpain Township building, where they said that they had not received any reports of voting machines not working properly or other irregularities. Castor said all indications were that voters at county polling places were "well behaved, [with] no partisanship, just waiting their turn." Richards, who is also the chair of the county Election Board, said turnout was already over 30 percent "before lunch." Turnout is expected to exceed 60 percent. With less than 24 hours until the polls open in Pennsylvania, former President Bill Clinton stopped at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell to rally Democratic voters. Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro, Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz, as well as Congressional candidates George Badey and Kathy Boockvar preceded Clinton at the rostrum. President Bill Clinton will tour through Pennsylvania on Monday, Nov. 5 to rally Obama-Biden supporters, with stops in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Scranton, and Blue Bell. Clinton has been campaigning through swing states in a final push the last week before the election, including Iowa, Florida, Colorado, Ohio, Virginia, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin. The Blue Bell event is open to the public and will be held at Montgomery County Community College's Physical Education Center Gymnasium. Tickets are free but required for entry and are available online. Doors open at 2:30 p.m.

The Montgomery County Board of Commissioners will meet again today at 10 a.m. in the 8th-floor board room at One Montgomery Plaza in Norristown. While nothing on the agenda is Norristown specific, there's quite of bit of business affecting all county residents on the commissioners' plate, including a discussion of the quarterly budget and the 2013 budget process. The commissioners will also be declaring a state of emergency, according to the agenda, presumably in response to the damage and destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy in our region this week. You can expect to lose around $1,000 out of next year's income. Social security taxes are going back up. After a two-year reduction is scheduled to end on Jan. 1, 2013, most working Americans can expect to lose some cash, according to a report on 6ABC. The change will affect over 163 million workers with the new tax hike. The social security reduction was intended to stimulte the economy, but according to reports many politicians do not believe it made a positive impact. "If it continues, it will threaten the revenue stream that funds social security," said the ABC report. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, makes a campaign stop in Wescosville Monday to drum up support for the Obama-Biden ticket in the final weeks of the campaign.
Laura J. Marie has been so frustrated with friends and family who do not support the Obama-Biden ticket that she went online a few days ago to offer to help the president's re-election campaign.
