Abington Dominates ‘Music In Motion’

The marching band cleans up at the competition. 'Best overall music,' anyone?

The 44th Annual "Music In Motion" marching band competition was held on Saturday night at Upper Moreland High School, featuring a trio of local marching bands, in addition to a pair of out-of-state competitors. "The judges score them on musical talent, color guard, movement, and several other catagories," said Tom Winterberg, president of the Upper Moreland Music Patrons.  "Those scores go into a regional database, and if the bands were to apply for a regional competition, the scores would help place them as to when they would be performing." Abington Senior High School was the biggest winner, taking home trophies for "Best Overall Music," "Best Overall Percussion," and "Highest Overall Score." Plymouth-Whitemarsh took home the Cunningham …

Are Parents and Students Ready to Head ‘Skyward?’

The Abington School District unveiled 'Skyward,' a student data access system, last week for secondary students.

One question summed up the Abington School Board’s orientation last night of the school district’s new student data management system: “Why does it say ‘absent’ in that box?” The “box” signified a day of the week for one particular student as shown on a calendar. He or she (the student’s personal information was redacted) missed class last week—and the system knew ... and now, his or her parents likely know. The system is called Skyward. It’s new to the district this year, though a committee spent about two years researching it (as well as six other similar programs). Skyward, which is based in Stevens Point, WI., manages a student’s schedule, grades, attendance record, and lists a student’s teachers, GPA, homework, tests, quizzes and …

Abington School District Expands its Nondiscrimination Policy

The amendments are in line with the district's new nondiscrimination statment.

The Abington School Board approved a motion last night amending several of the district’s policies to reflect the district’s relatively new nondiscrimination statement and policy. In late March, the board approved a modified professional and nonprofessional employee policy; “sexual orientation” and “gender identity/expression” were added as protected classes. See that story here. School board President Raymond McGarry said the board directed the district’s administration to identify other district policies that include a nondiscrimination statement … and align those policies with the updated one. The five policy sections affected in yesterday’s motion are: curriculum, regarding nondiscrimination of students in the classroom; human …

Mr. Taylor , I think that the School Board expects decent behavior and that changing the policy reflects that expectation. Legislation can give citizens redress, which is a basic tenet of our country. I argue that an education free from abject discrimination is a right; it is an entitlement (not in the pejorative connotation) based on the moral principle that all are created equal. One should not…   more ›

Updated with Video Interviews: [Fake] Fatal Crash at Abington High

One day before the prom, Abington students are reminded of the dangers of drinking and driving.

It was, blood, carnage and death on the Abington Senior High School campus—all to prove a point. The high school, along with the Friends Against Alcohol and Drugs organization (FAAD), held its 15th annual mock crash yesterday. Always held the morning before the day of the prom, the crash scene serves as a reminder not to drink and drive. A white Ford Taurus “crashed” into a black Ford Focus at about 8:30 a.m. on the road between the gym and the stadium. A man on a bicycle was pinned under the wreckage, as well. There was one confirmed fatality, according to Abington Police Sgt. Patrick Molloy, and several “serious injuries.” The "driver" will likely be charged with homicide by vehicle and DUI. The scene was grim. “Blood,” concocted from …

Abington Fire Company Hosts AP Gov Students

Student Government Day is hands-on for Abington high school students.

ABINGTON—The Abington Township Fire Department (ATFD) taught Abington Senior High School students about the role that firefighters play in the community and provided some fire safety education lessons as part of Student Government Day April 13. Selected students from the high school's Advanced Placement government and social studies classes were invited to spend a day touring several township agencies to learn more about how their local community operates; one of their stops included the Abington Fire Co., one of five fire companies that comprises ATFD.
