Abington Girls' Track Cruises to an Easy District Championship Win

The team now looks forward to states.

Given Leah Nugent's numerous track accomplishments, a stumble in one event wasn't going to prevent her from excelling in another. So when the Abington senior's fall between the first and second hurdle of the 100-meter event in the PIAA District 1, Class-AAAA finals forced her from the competition—despite easily taking the preliminaries and semifinals—Nugent refocused. "It was extremely frustrating, but there was no sense crying over spilt milk," Nugent said. "I couldn't do anything about it, and I was fortunate to have another race to run. Some people only have that one race." The "other" individual event happened to be the one in which Nugent set the state record as a sophomore with a time of 41.4 seconds. Abington Track Teams Take Second at SOL Championships

Matthews and Nugent win two individual gold medals for girls; Taylor takes one for the boys.

Two weeks after racing in the glare of the revered Penn Relays, the Abington track and field teams returned to fight for conference pride at the Suburban One League (SOL) National Track and Field Championships. Concluding Saturday at William Tennent High School in Warminster, the boys and girls teams finished second in the overall team standings. The boys earned 164 points, well behind Council Rock's winning total of 286, while the girls' 184 points trailed Pennsbury's 206 1/2. Despite the second-place finish, the Lady Ghosts won several events and set meet records.
