According to multiple news sources, President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit Hatfield on Friday as part of a tour to make a public case for his administration's plan for addressing the impending "fiscal cliff." So what is the fiscal cliff? It's the changes expected to go into effect when the 2011 Budget Control Act expires at the end of the year. Among the changes are: At the same time, spending cuts agreed on in last year's debt ceiling agreement will go into effect, meaning steep cuts to things like the defense budget and Medicare. The Montgomery County Planning Commission honored five projects and their creators yesterday at the annual Montgomery Awards ceremony. The program recognizes the best in planning and design and revitalization in the county. The Glenside Commercial District was honored with a revitalization award; the other category is land development. The Glenside Commercial District received a 2012 Montgomery Award for streetscape enhancements that have revitalized the Easton Road corridor, which runs through the heart of Glenside. This project has helped reinvigorate a popular, walkable, aesthetically pleasing neighborhood where residents and visitors are excited to shop and support local businesses. Abington Commissioner John Spiegelman recently accepted an $875 check from Lee’s Hoagie House owner Jon Waxman on behalf of the Helping Hand Foundation. Waxman, who owns the Abington and the Horsham Lee’s Hoagie Houses, donated 10 percent of the sales of both restaurants Nov. 3 to benefit those affected by Hurricane Sandy. See the initial story here. Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday. It's a day to patronize and support the locally owned small businesses in your community. Hosted by American Express and sponsored by FedEx, Clear Channel and many other corporate supporters, public officials and advocacy groups, the third annual Small Business Saturday will be held Nov. 24, to help small businesses generate exposure and, well, business during the biggest shopping season of the year.
