Penn State’s catcher and DH are named to the All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team.
Penn State Abington seniors Bill Parave and Mike Kerns have been named to the D3Baseball.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team earlier this week. Parave, a designated hitter, earned first-team honors and Kerns, a catcher, landed a spot on the second team. Here’s a bit about both players: Parave, of Pennsauken, N.J., earned first-team recognition as a designated hitter after excelling at both third base and on the mound for the Nittany Lions. A First Team All-NEAC Conference selection at first base and pitcher, and NEAC Player of the Year, the senior set a Penn State Abington record this season since joining the NEAC by reaching base safely in 22 consecutive games; he also had eight multiple-RBI games. The Rydal-Meadowbrook Civic Association will hold a panel discussion on the future of the township at Penn State Abington on Friday.
Joy Pollock, a member of the Rydal-Meadowbrook Civic Association, has been an Abington resident for a little over ten years. She’ll gladly say that Abington is a quality place to live, but said the township’s growth is stagnant despite housing some really big institutions. Pollock, and others, are likely hoping that a panel discussion called “Abington’s Next Century: Innovation and Growth Initiative” will help spur some forward thinking when it comes to the local economy. “Abington, many times, gets awards for being ‘very livable’ and a ‘best place to live’ and blah, blah, blah," Pollock said. "It’s all true, and if you live here, you feel that way, however, we’re not seeing growth in Abington and yet we have Penn State University and …

The Abington School District hosts a meeting to lay out a timeline for the field's renovations.
Residents who live adjacent to Memorial Field hit up the school district administration building Wednesday night to sit in on a progress report regarding the property. Most were in favor of the proposed upgrades to the languishing field. “I live on Rosemont Lane — my back fence faces the fields and I just want to know what’s going on,” Charles Greenberg said before the meeting. “I guess if they cleaned it up a little, fixed the fence and the fixed the tennis courts, that would be a good thing.” Resident Chuck Baker said, “I’m glad they’re doing something with the field. I don’t want a parking lot or a shopping center to end up there.” The school district entered into a 25-year lease agreement with Penn State Abington for Memorial Field, …

The Abington School District-owned Memorial Field is slated to receive a $5 million upgrade; the rejuvenated field could be opened by August 2014.
Memorial Field — the former home of Abington graduations and current home of walkers and joggers — is slated to get an upgrade … and now there are some dates to work with. Abington School District Assistant Superintendent Leigh Altadonna announced a proposed timeline for the plan approval and construction of the new elements of Memorial Field. The district entered into a 25-year lease agreement with Penn State Abington for the field, which is on Huntingdon Road between Susquehanna Road and Rosemont Lane, in August. Rather than paying rent, the university will make about $5 million in upgrades to the facility. In return, Penn State Abington’s athletic teams will be able to practice and compete on the grounds.
