Video: Mattiacci Concedes to Dean in the 153rd

Challenger Nick Mattiacci spoke to a crowd of Republicans at the North Penn VFW last night

Republican challenger Nick Mattiacci lost his bid for the 153rd district last night.  Mattiacci, an attorney from Elkins Park, lost to Democratic State Representative and former Abington Commissioner Madeleine Dean by about 10,000 votes.  The total vote count according to the county website: Mattiacci spoke to the Republican crowd at the North Penn VFW on Jenkintown Road in Glenside at about 9:45 p.m.; he received an ovation when he walked in the door at 9 p.m. Mattiacci thanked his family, his volunteers, several Abington Commissioners and longtime Abington Republican Jon Fox for helping him get his foot in the door … politically speaking.  “We worked hard [but] the numbers don’t show it,” Mattiacci said. He went on to congratulate Dean…

Abington Republicans Might Have a Short Night

Nick Mattiacci concedes to State Rep. Madeleine Dean.

Update 9:38 p.m.: Bob Adshead, Chairman of the Abington Township Rockledge Borough Republican Organization (ATRO), said the two candidates that the organization is closely following, Joe Rooney and Nick Mattiacci, are trailing in early returns.  "It was a nice day, but we have real early returns right now, and it doesn't look good so far," Adshead said. The Republicans are meeting at the North Penn VFW on Jenkintown Road. With returns from four of the 39 polls, Adshead said that both Rooney and Mattiacci are down 2:1 to their respective competitors. As for how Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney affected the polls locally, Adshead said it's too early to tell.  "We're waiting for more data, but people were reporting 85 percent …

Mattiacci Vies for the 153rd, Again

Nick Mattiacci votes in Elkins Park; talks about how his experience in the general election differs from that of the special election.

Republican challenger for the 153rd district Nick Mattiacci stood outside of the Elkins Park Presbyterian Church on Cedar Road late this morning greeting voters. He chatted them up on topics ranging from family to cheesesteak venues. It was his second visit to the venue today; he had gotten there at about 6:50 a.m., left to visit other polling places ... and to put on a heavier jacket and a second pair of socks ... and came back at about 11 a.m. to vote. Mattiacci seemed calmer as compared to his first run for the 153rd. “The first time was so rushed,” Mattiacci said. “Everything felt so immediate because we felt the stakes were so high; every decision had to be made in eight or 10 weeks. This time, things were spaced out a bit more; it …

Letter to the Editor: Mattiacci Reflects on Loss of Specter

Nick Mattiacci is the Republican candidate for State Rep. in the 153rd Legislative District.

To the editor: Like so many, I was saddened to hear of the passing of United States Senator Arlen Specter. I humbly write this to honor him because in this day of partisan divide, a politician who stands for ideals over ideology should be celebrated.  Senator Specter will be categorized by some as a political opportunist however, I always envisioned him as a leader who had the moral courage to take a stand for his beliefs. I always enjoyed watching Senator Specter campaign because whether he speaking to senior citizens or high school seniors, Senator Specter had the uncanny ability to connect with each individual. What I respected most about Senator Specter was that he boldly held the belief that being on the right and being right were …

Letter to the Editor: Mattiacci Calls Voter ID Law 'Common Sense'

Republican candidate for the 153rd Legislative District Nick Mattiacci weighs in on the Voter ID delay

To the editor: [The preliminary injunction of the voter ID law] is disappointing because the voter ID law is a common sense measure that will ensure the integrity of our elections, but it's clear that the Pennsylvania Department of State, PennDOT and the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners have done everything they could to accommodate people who are in need of a photo ID. However, I am pleased that the long term outcome is that photo ID will be a requirement in future elections.   Nick Mattiacci Elkins Park

Letter to the Editor: Like it or Not, Voter ID Law Will Likely Stick

Republican candidate for the 153rd legislative district Nick Mattiacci responds to the recent ruling on the voter ID law.

To the editor: As a candidate for State Representative in the 153rd Legislative District, I have had the privilege to meet with and speak to thousands of residents in Abington and Upper Dublin about the issues that are important to them. One issue that has been a frequent topic of discussion among the people I meet is the new law requiring voters to present photo ID when they go to the polls on Nov. 6. The people I have met include the young and elderly, black and white, blue collar and white collar, Republican, Democrat and Independent.  Everyone has an opinion and is entitled to it; conversation and debate is what makes this country the envy of the world.  Whether we agree with the voter ID law or not, the fact remains it is the law …

Don't you think if two polls workers can vouch for a voter's residency and eligibility then they should be allowed to vote?  Don't you think the state should have provided provisions to allow other governmental entities to produce compliant ID's such as county and local municipalities assuming they could meet the specifications?  Don't you think the state should increase the accessibility to any …   more ›

Dean Defeats Mattiacci

It’s now Abington Commissioner and State Representative-elect Madeleine Dean.

It was a lively scene at Abington Commissioner Madeleine Dean’s house after the polls closed last night. She called it a “cast party.” Area Democrats gathered to celebrate her victory over Republican Nick Mattiacci in the special election for the unexpired term of former State Representative, now Montgomery County Commissioner, Josh Shapiro. Mattiacci conceded at 9:30 p.m. at the North Penn VFW. The term is up for election in November; both Dean and Mattiacci will likely throw their respective hats into the ring for the rematch.  To see video, click on the video section here. Dean, the newly-minted commissioner of Ward 7, is coming off her second political victory in five months; that means she only had about 90 days to throw together a …

Republicans at the VFW

Update: Mattiacci concedes

Latest update 9:31 p.m. Republican supporters, along with a surprising number of younger volunteers, started to fill the North Penn VFW at about 8 p.m.    Mattiacci, prior to conceding at about 9:30 p.m. called his campaign "tough," but said he felt he rejuvenated the Republicans. He added, “[Madeleine Dean] will serve our district well until November … when I get in there."  Addressing the crowd, he said, "In typical Italian fashion, we came awfully close," and then compared his campaign to the movie “Rocky.” “’Rocky II’ happens in November," Mattiacci continued. "We're going to work hard during the summer and then take it in November.” The crowd chanted, "Nick!, Nick!, Nick!" Bob Adshead, chairman of the Abington Township Republican …

The US' Austerity in Charts -- Or, "Where is the Government Takeover Again?" http://bonddad.blogspot.com/2012/04/us-austerity-in-charts-or-where-is.html A big reason for the high unemployment rate is the cut in government jobs, especially at the state and local level. As Krugman notes: If public employment had grown the way it did under Bush, we’d have 1.3 million more government workers, and …   more ›

Abington Votes

Voting machine glitch at Abington Library resolved, Dean and Mattiacci vote

Turnout was light to about average at the polls at Abington Library at about 10 a.m. There was one glitch, though. According to Dottie Morse, a member of the Montgomery County Republican Committee, there was a problem with one of the Republican voting booths. A county official came to repair the problem — apparently the “hearing impaired” function was being activated accidentally. Still, Morse said seven Republican voters had to be turned away; one returned, though. All of the voting machines appeared to be working properly at about 11 a.m. Democratic candidate for the 153rd legislative district Madeleine Dean voted with her husband.  Prior to voting, she said felt energized, and added that she has great people working with her. She called…
