The Abington Police Athletic League will present Elvis tribute artist Doug Church with his all-new review at the Keswick Theatre on Thursday, April 11 at 7 p.m. Local comedian Joe Conklin, known as the man of a thousand voices, will open the evening with a family-friendly act.  This concert will benefit the Abington Police Athletic League, an organization that provides recreational and educational activities and programs for township boys and girls from age 11 through high school.  A portion of the proceeds will also go to established funds for the children of both slain Plymouth Township Officer Brad Fox and Glenside Weldon volunteer firefighter David G. There are many local authors who have written novels and biographies (some even autobiographies). I have friends who have worked for libraries in other parts of the country and you would be surprised at how many books get turned down for lack of worthwhile content, for a lack of professionalism in the publishing format, for a perceived lack of audience and for being published in a sub-standard …   more ›

Abington Represents, Wins at Greenfield Film Fez

The prestigious festival had its most successful year yet.

The stars of the future were out Wednesday, May 4, at the Keswick Theatre, as over 200 student filmmakers, friends, family, teachers and fans packed the house for the 2011 Greenfield Youth Film Festival. The festival, funded by the Greenfield Foundation, is a months-long process in which students from area high schools think up, create and submit short films. It all culminated on May 4, when the winning films were revealed and premiered. The festival began three years ago, and has doubled in size every year since. “The first year, we had five schools; the second year, we had 10 schools; and this year, we had 20 schools participating,” said Jill Greenfield Feldman, administrator for the Greenfield Foundation. “We brought in almost 200 films…

Letter to the Editor—Kudos on Keswick Cleanup

Thanks go out for cleaning 'The Village.'

I’d like to acknowledge and share the great spring cleanup workday that Jen Eyre organized Saturday, March 26.  She contacted the service learning coordinator at Abington Senior High School and arranged for eight students to come to Keswick Village Saturday to fulfill two of their 15 required service hours by helping to clean up the Village and do some painting. The students repainted the yellow “No parking” curb near Bittersweet, scrubbed and painted trash lids, painted the posts on the “Welcome to Keswick Village” sign near Panzeters, cleaned out the trash that gets caught between the trash cans and the decorative outside container, cleaned up around the tree wells, and picked up many, many cigarette butts from cracks in the sidewalks. …

Moms Q&A — Looking for some Local Theater

Need some theater but don't want to head downtown?

It’s that time of week once again for a little Mom Talk. Patch takes the chance to inform our readers: moms, dads, grandparents and family friends alike, to inform you each week of something new. This week, we take a question from a reader in Norristown.  Dear Patch: I want my kids to have a little bit of culture in their lives. I don’t think they are quite ready for a Broadway show, but I’d love to work more live theater into their routine. Do you know of any good spots in Montgomery County to have them experience that? I feel like a trip downtown might be too much, and at their ages (6 and 10), I am not sure what levels would be best. Any suggestions? Sincerely, Janet M., of Norristown   Thanks, Janet for the question. There are a number…

Get Out: It’s Thursday – What Are You Doing this Weekend?

Art, music and Socrates are featured in this week's 'Get Out.'

We got a taste of spring last week, but the snow and cold temperatures have returned in full force —and cabin fever has reached epidemic levels! Here are some ideas for things to do to get you out of the house.   1. Multicultural Film Series Where/When: Montgomery County Community College, 340 Dekalb Pike, Blue Bell; Feb. 25, 8 p.m. Why go: Featuring films that present a historical and cultural perspective on the gay and lesbian experience, the college’s Multicultural Film Series will screen Deepa Mehta’s “Fire” Feb. 25. The 1996 Hindi film has subtitles and explores the relationship between two women born of their confinement by social expectations. Pricing: $5   2. Socrates Café Where/When: Abington Library, 1030 Old York Road, Abington…
