PA: Montco Entities Eligible for Hurricane Sandy Relief

Municipalities, hospitals, school districts and some nonprofits can apply for aid.

The following information comes from Montgomery County government: The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) has notified Montgomery County Department of Public Safety that Montgomery County has been added to the major disaster declaration (DR-4099) related to Hurricane Sandy, for Public Assistance. Montgomery County has exceeded its $2.65 million threshold of damage and costs associated with the late October storm. The Public Assistance Program provides federal disaster grant assistance for debris removal, emergency protective measures (overtime and contracted services), and the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged public property. Lee's Gives Back

The Helping Hand Foundation gets a boost from hoagie sales.

  Abington Commissioner John Spiegelman recently accepted an $875 check from Lee’s Hoagie House owner Jon Waxman on behalf of the Helping Hand Foundation.  Waxman, who owns the Abington and the Horsham Lee’s Hoagie Houses, donated 10 percent of the sales of both restaurants Nov. 3 to benefit those affected by Hurricane Sandy.  See the initial story here. The local charity targets area people in need of assistance due to Hurricane Sandy.  “People are struggling right now,” Waxman said. Nov. 3. “Growing up in Cheltenham, and seeing what people are going through right now … it’s just kind of cool to be able to give back.  So the more people who come in, the more money we can donate.”

Has there ever been an effort - or are their laws or local ordinances that require - homeowners, property managers, townships, etc. to access the health and "utility threat" of mature or dying/decaying trees? Corbett: No Insurance Deductibles Will be Applied to Sandy Damage

Governor Tom Corbett advised insurance companies that deductibles, which can be up to five percent of the insured value of a home, should not be applied to any Hurricane Sandy homeowner insurance claims.

Pennsylvania Absentee Voters Get More Time

Tuesday's deadline pushed back due to Hurricane Sandy.

Congratulations, there is a silver lining. Hurricane Sandy has pushed back the clocks, at least when it comes to the state's absentee voters. According to reports on philly.com, Gov. Tom Corbett has extended the deadline for Pennsylvania's absentee voters to get in their votes. Originally set for 5 p.m. Tuesday, the new timed deadline is now pushed back to Thursday at 5 p.m. Corbett gave voters each day back that the county offices were closed due to Hurricane Sandy. In order to file for an absentee vote, a voter must show up in person at the county's election offices. Those in Montgomery County should visit the County Courthouse in Norristown. Non-Comcast customers will be able to use the wireless provider's Wifi hotspots for free through next week.

To help residents and emergency personnel cope with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Comcast is opening up its Xfinity WiFi hotspots in Greater Philadelphia and New Jersey to anyone who needs them–including non-Comcast customers. Comcast owns and operates thousands of WiFi hotspots in the Philadelphia region and in New Jersey that are typically only available to its customers. To use a hotspot, search for the “xfinitywifi” network name. Highways, Bridges Closed in Greater Philadelphia Region

I-76 and I-476 are among the closed state roads Monday night.

PennDOT announced Monday that several state highways, including I-95, I-476 and I-76, would be closed to all non-emergency vehicles until 2 a.m. Tuesday morning in response to Hurricane Sandy. Roads were closed per the order of Gov. Tom Corbett, say reports. According to a release, the transpiration department is closing "the full length of Interstates 95 and 676; I-476 (non-toll portion); I-76 from the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Passyunk Avenue and the U.S. Route 1 Extension in Philadelphia to all traffic except emergency vehicles" The Pennsylvania turnpike remains open.
