Norristown's Mike Piazza Snubbed by Baseball Hall of Fame Vote

Piazza's inaugural bid for the Hall of Fame falls short as the Baseball Writers' Association of America fail to elect anyone on the 2013 ballot.

Long regarded as one of the best hitting catchers of all time, Mike Piazza, a Norristown native, has failed in his inaugural bid for enshrinement at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. In his first year on the ballot, Piazza received 57.8 percent of the vote, which is 98 votes shy of the 75 percent requirement for election, according to the New York Times. Piazza wasn't alone, though, as voters with the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) failed to elect anyone on the 2013 ballot, which featured other big names including Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire and Jeff Bagwell. Betty Shellenberger — HOF

“I’m so glad I did what I did when I did,” said Betty Shellenberger.  Listed in three different athletic Halls of Fame — U.S. Field Hockey Hall of Fame, National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Philadelphia Sports Congress Hall of Fame — this pioneer turned 90 in July. Shellenberger said she feels fortunate that she played during the era when sports rotated along with the seasons.  That’s how she managed to be on the U.S. World Teams in both field hockey and lacrosse; during the 1930s through the 1960s, field hockey was a fall sport and lacrosse was played in spring.  Seasonal sports participation contrasts dramatically with today’s approach “to push the kids into one sport at four or five years old,” according to Shellenberger.   “I’d hate to …
