Glenside to Hold Second Annual ‘Keep the Parade Running’ 5K

The 5K/1-mile walk will benefit the Glenside July 4 Parade and fireworks and honors former Abington Commissioner Mike Gillespie.

The second annual “Keep the Parade Running” 5K run and 1-mile walk will be held April 13 at 8 a.m. The race starts at the North Penn VFW, 2519 Jenkintown Road. Number pickup starts at 7 a.m. The course takes two loops through Glenside and the roads will be closed for the race. "Originally when Mike died, I really wanted to think of something that he loved,” Carol Gillespie, Mike Gillespie’s wife and Abington Commissioner said in an interview last year. “This parade — he took it over about 23 years ago now — when he retired from the police force. He was always just … active. Anyway, I still can’t talk about it.” Carol Gillespie said the 5K is an important fundraiser, as the parade and its subsequent events will likely cost about $45,000. …

Glenside July 4 Parade

The Greater Glenside Patriotic Association's Independence Day celebration is tomorrow ... hopefully.

To celebrate America’s 236th birthday, the nonprofit Greater Glenside Patriotic Association will hold its three-tiered, admission-free celebration for Abington and Cheltenham residents. A decision to postpone the parade until Saturday will be made by 2 p.m. tomorrow. The day starts with a children’s celebration at 10 a.m. at Renninger Memorial Park, at Keswick Avenue and Waverly Road, with a decorated bike and stroller parade competition, followed by field sports at 10:30 a.m. Children’s refreshments will be served at noon. The children’s portion of the celebration continues to be supported by Abington Commissioner Carol Gillespie and the William R. May Funeral home. Next … is the parade. The parade, one of America’s oldest, …

Pics: 'Keep the Parade Running'

.

The Keep the Parade Running 5K brought in over 300 runners and more than $10,000.  The proceeds will benefit the Greater Glenside Patriotic Association, which sponsors Independence Day events, including the parade.  Abington Commissioner and Glenside resident Carol Gillespie helped organize the event to honor her late husband, Abington Commissioner Mike Gillespie. Mike Gillespie was instrumental in organizing Independence Day events in Glenside.  See the story here.      If you were at the event, feel free to upload some of your pictures.
