Abington Announces Plans for Fire Prevention Week

The Abington Township Fire Department will open its facilities to visitors in early October

  In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, the five companies that comprise the Abington Township Fire Department (ATFD) will hold open houses from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. throughout the week of Oct. 8. The public is invited to visit any of the companies during the aforementioned times on the following dates: At the open houses, participants will be able to view each station’s fire apparatus, chat with volunteer firefighters and learn about ways in which they can prevent fires. Members will also be on hand to share recruitment information with those who are interested in joining the ATFD. High School Flames

The Abington Township Fire Department holds its fifth annual Service Learning Day program in hopes of attracting volunteers.

About 30 Abington Senior High School students ran into a building filled with smoke …  and the Abington Township Fire Department hopes that some of them will do it again. The Abington Fire Department held its fifth annual Service Learning Day program at its Public Safety Training Facility on Florey Lane Friday morning. “It’s not a training program; it’s more of a exploratory program for the students,” Abington Fire Department Accreditation Manager David Schramm said. “They sign up for it, and it’s something of a recruitment event for the fire department.” The students were taken through several “stations” at the facility, including a display and explanation of the equipment on the truck; a hands-on fire extinguisher display; a hose display…

I love this type of thing... we need more of "getting teens out into the world." I bet the kids involved in this activity will remember this event long after they have forgotten everything they learned in algebra 2. Some of these kids might even become firemen and women. Abington Fire Company Hosts AP Gov Students

Student Government Day is hands-on for Abington high school students.

ABINGTON—The Abington Township Fire Department (ATFD) taught Abington Senior High School students about the role that firefighters play in the community and provided some fire safety education lessons as part of Student Government Day April 13. Selected students from the high school's Advanced Placement government and social studies classes were invited to spend a day touring several township agencies to learn more about how their local community operates; one of their stops included the Abington Fire Co., one of five fire companies that comprises ATFD.
