Electronics Can Be Disposed of in One Montco Location

Don't curbside that television. Take it to Cheltenham.

Since an official ban on electronic disposal in Montgomery County earlier this year, residents of the county cannot just dump items in the trash. Leaving a television, for example, curbside won't help you. The garbage man can't take it away. Instead, you are asked to visit occasional drop-off days in various locations. Update: Police Found Victim Inside Store

Police notified fire crews after responding to a 9-1-1 hangup at Melrose Shopping Center.

Police, not a security guard, alerted firefighters to the blaze that began through three stores at the Melrose Shopping Center in Cheltenham on Thursday night, a fire official said Friday. Cheltenham Fire Company Asssistant Chief Chris Drach said that police were responding to a 9-1-1 hangup call at the shopping center, which is near the corner of Cheltenham and Bellmawr avenues. Upon arrival, Drach said, the police found the guard lying on the floor of one of the shopping center's stores. They noticed the fire and alerted fire crews. “Police were sent here for a 9-1-1 hang-up call," Drach said."There was smoke coming from the front of the building, they noticed an occupant, down on the floor in the building. One Dead in Fire at Cheltenham Strip Mall

Fire spread to three stores at the Melrose Shopping Center on Cheltenham Avenue.

A security guard who reported a fire at the Melrose Shopping Center in Cheltenham on Thursday night has died as a result of injuries sustained in the blaze. CBS Philadelphia reported that firefighters pulled the man from the blaze when they arrived at the scene, but that he died after being taken in "very serious condition" to Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. PhillyFireNews.com reported that the victim was in cardiac arrest when he was taken from the scene. Firefighting crews were still working to completely extinguish the fire as daylight broke Friday morning. Fattah Retains 2nd District, Calls for Action

With sources calling a win for Fattah, the representative looks twoard the new year.

Chaka Fattah, the incumbent Democratic representative for Cheltenham and the rest of the 2nd Congressional district, easily retained his seat in Tuesday's election, cruising to an easy victory over Republican challenger Robert Allen Mansfield and independent James Foster. Fattah has served as the district's representative since 1995. With 98.8 percent of state districts reporting early Wednesday, Fattah had collected more than 89 percent of the vote. Fattah said that, with this win, he was going to be focused on working with house Republicans on fiscal issues. Verizon Customers Without 911 Due to Outage

An outage at a Hatboro Verizon center has temporarily blocked subscribers from calling Montgomery County 911

According to a Pottstown Mercury Facebook post, Verizon Mobile customers are without access to Montgomery County 911. The outage affects about seven municipalities, according to PhillyBurbs: Hatboro, Upper and Lower Moreland, Upper Dublin, Horsham, Abington and Cheltenham. Due to an outage at a Verizon central office in Hatboro at around 8 a.m., customers will be temporarily unable to contact the 911 call center and are instead advised to contact their local police department for emergency assistance. Over in Bucks County at around 8 a.m., the 911 system there was out of service due to maintenance. Those needing emergency assistance were advised to call area police agencies. I know for a fact that all emergency centers including hospitals have back up generators. I find it appaling that the back up generator was not working during a power outage. That is a disgrace! Hopefully verizon will make sure that it is working in future!!   more ›

Arsonist Gets 80 Months for Fires in Towamencin and Wyncote Academy in Cheltenham

Jeffrey Reese Streamer, 44, of Upper Gwynedd, pleaded guilty Tuesday to two fires

Jeffrey Reese Streamer, 44, of the 1200 block of Browning Court, Upper Gwynedd, was sentenced to 40 to 80 months in state prison for pleading guilty to two arsons and burglaries over a two-day period in 2011 in Towamencin and Cheltenham. According to Montgomery Newspapers, Streamer admitted to setting a fire on July 4, 2011 to 1010 Anders Road in Towamencin. Streamer also admitted to torching Wyncote Academy in Cheltenham the next day. The private school is on the 7920 of Washington Lane. Streamer must serve 20 years' probation following imprisonment on two counts each of arson that endangered persons and burglary, according to the article The judge also ordered Streamer to pay $222,168 in restitution for both properties.
