New Board Order

The Abington Board of Commissioners elects new leadership.

With the resignation of Abington Board of Commissioners President Carol DiJoseph late last month [see story here], the board needed to take care of some housekeeping. At its meeting last night, the board elected a new president and vice president. There were two nominations for president; commissioner Dennis Zappone nominated Myers and commissioner John Spiegelman nominated commissioner Steven Kline. “I feel commissioner Kline has, under many circumstances, including the Wawa hearing and the non-discrimination ordinance, taken a very tough leadership role in the face of adversity and opposition,” Spiegelman said.    Kline, reading a statement, said that he would “bring the board to a new direction” and would help create a “sustainable …

Father’s Day, According to the Commissioners

Kline, Myers, DiJoseph and Ring reminisce about their dads.

Father’s Day is an ideal time to take a moment to contemplate what fathers mean on a personal level and what gifts they’ve given to their children. Who better to ask than the officials that Abington elected to represent them — the commissioners that Abington residents see around town; you know their names from ballots, but maybe haven’t had a chance to hear from them on a personal level. Patch asked Abington commissioners how their fathers inspired them. “My father made sure my brothers and I knew that hard work would bring success. He led by example,” said Abington Commissioner Steven Kline. Now that he is a father, Kline said he also tries to lead by example and is proud to be a part of the global party of dads. “The best Father’s Day …

Fathers who take an active life in their child's life reap the rewards of children who are productive citizens who obey the law. The two common denominator's of the criminal are those who do not have a mother and father in their life as well as not having completed more than the 10th grade. This common in most criminals lives. Despite a divorce, I take a very active part of my daughters life and …   more ›

Residents Will Have to Wait to ‘Like’ Abington

Abington Public Affairs Committee postpones potential social media presence.

Last month, the Abington Public Affairs Committee threw around the idea of the township having its own Facebook account; Abington Board of Commissioners President Carol DiJoseph said at the April meeting that residents had approached her with a “Where-have-you-been?” mindset regarding the township and social media. Those residents will have to keep their mindset. Following a presentation by Abington Assistant Manager Matt Lahaza yesterday at the public affairs committee meeting, in which he surveyed neighboring municipalities’ use of social media, the consensus of the committee was to put the kybosh on a township social media presence—for now. Lahaza’s research uncovered the following: Out of the 31 municipalities surveyed, only four have …

Letter to the Editor—Kudos on Keswick Cleanup

Thanks go out for cleaning 'The Village.'

I’d like to acknowledge and share the great spring cleanup workday that Jen Eyre organized Saturday, March 26.  She contacted the service learning coordinator at Abington Senior High School and arranged for eight students to come to Keswick Village Saturday to fulfill two of their 15 required service hours by helping to clean up the Village and do some painting. The students repainted the yellow “No parking” curb near Bittersweet, scrubbed and painted trash lids, painted the posts on the “Welcome to Keswick Village” sign near Panzeters, cleaned out the trash that gets caught between the trash cans and the decorative outside container, cleaned up around the tree wells, and picked up many, many cigarette butts from cracks in the sidewalks. …
