Abington Passes 'Wawa Ordinance'

Following a nearly four-hour special hearing, the Abington Board of Commissioners passes a text amendment to the zoning ordinance.

After hours of expert testimony and several passionate comments from residents, the Abington Board of Commissioners approved an ordinance late last night amending the Abington zoning ordinance by creating a new use to be known as “motor vehicle fueling center,” subject to certain criteria in "Planned Business" zoning districts. The approval essentially gets the ball rolling for Provco Goodman’s development of a 4,900 square-foot Wawa with a fueling station at the vacant parcel in the 800 block of Old York Road, near Baeder and Hilltop roads. The company submitted development plans to the township yesterday, according to director of planning and code enforcement Larry Matteo. The board passed the ordinance by a vote of 7-6. Abington …

Abington Board to Hear Wawa Application Tonight

The Abington Board of Commissioners will hear a zoning ordinance amendment linked to the development of a Wawa in the 800 block of Old York Road tonight at 7:30 p.m.

It's sizing up to be quite a meeting, so get to the township building early.  Tonight, the Abington Board of Commissioners will consider a zoning ordinance amendment filed by Provco Goodman Jenkintown, L.P. which would essentially get the ball rolling on the development of a Wawa store and fueling station in the 800 block of Old York Road, near Baeder and Hilltop roads. The property is now vacant (though someone is selling Christmas trees on the site). The planning commission, which is an advisory council, voted last month to reject the amendment by a vote of 5-4.  See that story here. Planning commission board members Catherine Gauthier, Ronald Rosen, Charles Carter, Lucy Strackhouse and David Good voted to reject the ordinance. Many …

Wawa on Hold, For Now

The Abington Planning Commission denies a request for an amendment to the zoning ordinance; it would affect the development of a Wawa in the 800 block of Old York Road.

It’s back to the drawing board for Provco Goodman, L.P., the firm looking to develop a Wawa at the now-vacant parcel near the corner of Baeder, Hilltop and Old York roads. The Abington Planning Commission shot down its request to amend the zoning ordinance for the area that would allow for certain uses including a fuel filling station and fueling signs. The area is currently zoned “PB,” planned business, and Provco Goodman wishes to build a Wawa, replete with 12 gas pumps and a bank on the parcel. Though the planning commission is just an advisory panel, should the commission have approved the ordinance, it would have gone before the board of commissioners for consideration.  Planning Commission Chairman Ronald Rosen lauded Bruce Goodman…

Victor, you might not like what Lora has to say, but thank God SOMEONE is raising some issues here and making people think. We don't have to agree 100% with everything that she or anyone else has to say, but at least she's not sitting back doing nothing and fighting for something she believes in. If it's okay for you, it's okay for her. Remember, not everyone likes everything you say, either. She…   more ›

Wawa Proposed for Former Bally’s Site

Bruce Goodman, owner of Goodman Properties, presented conceptual designs of a Wawa with a gas station to replace the large downtown Willow Grove-area property.

Right now, the former Bally’s site and its imposing building in downtown Willow Grove, sits empty - save for a couple of construction vehicles. Bruce Goodman, owner of Goodman Properties, presented to the July 9 Community Development Committee a concept as to what that property could be. “We’re proposing to demolish the building, and construct two buildings there,” Goodman told the committee. In replace of the Bally’s building, Goodman suggested constructing a Wawa with a gas station and a bank with drive-thru service. The Wawa would be a 6,200 square-foot building, with six gas stations and 12 dispensers, while the bank building would be 4,500 square-feet, with three drive-thru windows. Parking for the bank would consist of 24 spaces, and…

tom, The community center you speak of was a small part of a greater redevelopment that was voted down by the commissioners, despite the overwhelming support from the community. With that being said, a community center will not raise the much needed funds our township desperately craves. The only thing it will do is place a greater burden on the taxpayers of UM. The planned development of Mr. …   more ›
