State Rep. Issues Statement on Scouts Policy

Pennsylvania State Rep. Brendan Boyle: ‘There is no place for discrimination or bigotry in the Boy Scouts.’

State Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-170, on Friday, released the following statement after the Philadelphia chapter of Boy Scouts of America proposed changing the organization’s national policy to give local units autonomy when it comes to allowing gay members. “I am very glad that the Philadelphia Boy Scouts of America have decided to press for an end to discrimination against people on the basis of sexual orientation. This is an important step forward in the fight for full equality for all Americans. As a founding member of the PA House LGBT Equality Caucus, I support this decision for furthering the expansion of rights once denied to our fellow Americans just for being gay. Only at gay leaders. Sexuality is not a common issue for discussion anyway in scouting. I have no problem with it if one doesn't try to influence others. It is a personal issue and should stay there. Hetero- or homosexuality isn't the issue. Distraction from the focus of scouting is more the problem. Any potential for abuse is also.   more ›

Montco Representative Off to Israel

State Rep. Brendan Boyle, who represents a portion of Abington and Rockledge, will visit Israel in early March. He will be accompanied by his brother, state Rep. Kevin Boyle.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia recently selected state Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-170) and his brother, state Rep. Kevin Boyle (D-172), to visit Israel next week. The federation chose Brendan and Kevin to travel to Israel to discuss economic and foreign policy issues with Israeli leaders and exchange ideas regarding Philadelphia's association with the Jewish state. "Israel is our most important strategic ally in the world, and an estimated 300,000 Americans are living in Israel today," Brendan Boyle said in a press release. Video: Abington Rallies for Anti-Discrimination Ordinance

State Reps. Shapiro and Boyle and commissioner Lori Schreiber spoke in front of the township building today.

Abington Against Discrimination and Defamation (Abington ADD) held its Kickoff to Equality: A Celebration of Diversity event this morning at the township building.  State Rep. Josh Shapiro, D-153 spoke about the importance of having statewide anti-discrimination legislation; he added that he would seek county-wide legislation regarding the subject should he become a county commissioner.  Abington Township CommissionerLori Schreiber talked about the steps she took to pass a township anti-discrimination ordinance; she talked about the ordinance failing in January.

Kickoff to Equality: Today at the Township Building

Several speakers, businesses, and religious organizations will be on hand at the township building this morning.

Abington Against Discrimination and Defamation (Abington ADD) will hold its Kickoff to Equality: A Celebration of Diversity event Saturday, June 18 at the Abington Township Building at 11 a.m. State Rep. Josh Shapiro, D-153, will speak at the event, which will celebrate the diverse Abington community and will rally support for a local non-discrimination ordinance in the township.
