Cabaret Nights are On in Ambler

The Ambler playhouse will feature its second cabaret act this Monday.

This season, Act II Playhouse tried something new. Fans of the theater are able to spend some evenings with Philadelphia’s much-admired performers at this season’s Cabaret Night series. Currently, there five cabaret shows for the 2011-2012 season. The first one debuted on Sept. 19 with Jeffrey Coon, known for his many performances at the Walnut Street Theatre. He immediately jumped on board when Act II asked if he’d star in one of them. “They have done several individual cabarets over the past few seasons,” Coon said. “I was extremely flattered and excited to have been asked to be the first one this season.  I have been looking for an opportunity to work on a cabaret over the past few years and, so often, because of other work and …

'Sylvia' ... Speak!

The Act II Playhouse in Ambler opens its season with 'Sylvia,' a play about a dog portrayed by a human.

Ambler’s Act II Playhouse will open its 2011-2012 season with Sylvia, a romantic comedy written by A.R. Gurney and first produced in 1995. Act II’s associate artistic director Harriet Power directs the play. Power has a 21-year history of directing in Philadelphia, working at most of the theatres here as well as theatres across the U.S. She has directed 20 productions at Villanova University, where she’s also a theatre professor. “Sylvia was a play I've long wanted to do,” Power said. “The entire Act II team loves the play and gave it an immediate green light. “It’s got just about everything we look for in a season-opener — a great story, it's wonderfully funny, it has some surprising and very moving moments, and it takes advantage of what…

'Free Range Thinking' At Act II Through Sunday

.

Are you easily offended? If the answer is yes, than you might want to stay away from “Free Range Thinking.” Or, you can go to challenge your beliefs and laugh at yourself and our culture. Robert Dubac’s “Free Range Thinking” drew laughs from an almost sold-out crowd during his first workshop performance at the Act II Playhouse Sunday night.  Dubac’s show operates under the premise of a storyline about a man who loses his memory and has to try to create his own beliefs without knowing what he has been told before. The plot line doesn’t follow through the whole show very well, but it doesn’t take away from the performance at all. The laughs started at the very beginning during Dubac’s announcements to turn off phones and kept going until his…

'Art' Shows in Ambler

A famous director heads to the small town to bring the area a theater performance that's even better than big time shows.

Art is Yasmina Reza's comedy about art and the three friends who are caught up in one single piece of work—one completely white canvas “created” by a trendy artist and costing more than you can imagine. The show, staring three of Philadelphia’s most outstanding actors, has been extended until June 12 at Act II Playhouse due to six rave reviews and incredible ticket sales. “We hoped we could extend this show from the very beginning,” says Bud Martin, the director of the show.    Art has been performed on London’s West End, as well as Broadway in New York City. Martin has also been in both places, co-producing Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 on Broadway and Legally Blonde in London. He joined Ambler’s Act II Playhouse in 2008 as producing artistic …
