Abington Volleyball Team Celebrates Playoff ... Appearance

Ghosts steal a game from CR North, but fall

NEWTOWN — Handshakes, hugs, high-fives and some tears punctuated the scene in Council Rock North's gym, as Abington players climbed over each other in celebrating the school's first PIAA District 1 tournament volleyball appearance. Imagine if Galloping Ghosts had won. Abington lost 3-1 in a four-game set on Tuesday night — 25-15, 23-25, 25-16, 25-16 — but those details were wholly insignificant to the seven excited seniors and outgoing coach Jaeson Han. "We didn't expect to win," senior Steve Woll said. "We knew it was our last game and we just wanted to have fun." Fun has been the year-long mantra in a season without expectations, and Abington remained true to that ideal. One of 12 Suburban One League teams in the 16-team field, the 15th …

Despite have the momentum of a five-set win April 11, the Galloping Ghosts stumbled in Holland Township, and dropped three straight games to the Golden Hawks, 25-13, 25-18 and 25-22. They didn't show much fight until the final game. "I don't know about anybody else, but I didn't feel good today," Abington's middle hitter Steve Woll said. "There was really no tempo, and we couldn't get fired up. The first game shot it for the rest of the day. That killed everybody. Then we did too little, too late." Woll's smash that sailed long provided an omen for the…

Abington Volleyball Hitting for Fun

This team's got personality ...

NEWTOWN — With nicknames like "2-good," "Slippy Prego," "Grubble" and "Pea Coat," it's tough to take the Abington volleyball team seriously this season. That's the way they like it. "We might not be the best team in the league, but we have the most personality," said senior Joe Weiseman, aka "2-good," after the Galloping Ghosts dropped a Tuesday match to Council Rock North in three games. "We're trying to have fun this year." The experienced group of Ghosts have realistic expectations when it comes to how they'll fare against the powers of the Suburban One League, from Pennsylvania state runner-up Pennsbury to William Tennent and Pennridge, to the up-and-coming Indians, a team they hung with in each of the three games, but ultimately …
