New course allows those with disabilities to learn to defend themselves with martial arts.
It doesn't matter if you are in a wheelchair, walk with a cane, or even have an amputated limb. The Adaptive Martial Arts program offered at the YMCA in Abington can still teach self defense. According to an article in the Times Chronicle, the new program which began in September offers a free class for those that are members or not. Kenpo Martial Arts instructor Kenn Perry and Willow Foundation for Adaptive Martial Arts Chris Genell teach the course, which is open to those of all ages with any kind of disability. Perry was diagnosed with Polio at age 3, and teaches the class from his wheelchair. The free class is held Sundays in Studio A at 11:30 a.m., said Abington YMCA Special needs coordinator Michelle McGuire to the Chronicle. Those …

The Abington YMCA’s annual Thanksgiving-morning race brings in thousands of dollars for the YMCA’s Annual Campaign
The Abington YMCA is celebrating its tenth annual Gobble Wobble 5K run and 2-mile walk on Thanksgiving at 9 a.m. The USA Track and Field-certified 5K and walk will bring more than 2,000 walkers, runners and joggers to the area. Check out the map of the race on the USATF.org website here. In addition to clogging the streets for the morning, and giving participants a way to burn some calories before their feast, the Gobble Wobble will raise money for the YMCA’s financial assistance program. Abington YMCA marketing and communication director (and Gobble Wobble run director) Beth Kenas said last year that the Abington YMCA doled out hundreds of thousands of dollars in assistance for memberships, childcare and summer camp. Kenas said that …

The Abington YMCA parking area and neighboring homes are now safer thanks to a $1,000 grant from Giroud Tree and Lawn. The grant is part of the landscaper's Treework for Charity program. “Safety was the top priority for Giroud’s grant,” Giroud arborist Rob Nagy said. “A hazardous locust tree, located on a sharp slope along the border of the YMCA parking area, had a shallow root system that was at high risk for toppling. Tree removal was required to protect the safety of neighboring homes and the YMCA members using the parking area.” See the video. “The well-being of our members, staff and neighbors is a priority for us,” YMCA Associate Executive Director Missy DiMassa said. “Giroud’s donation helps to ensure that people who utilize and …

The Abington YMCA named Bill Hicks as its 2011 Employee of the Year. Hicks was honored at the YMCA of Philadelphia and Vicinity’s Employee Recognition Luncheon Jan. 17. Hicks has been a part of the Abington YMCA’s maintenance department for more than two years. He is responsible for keeping the Abington Y running smoothly — from making sure every room is spotless and sparkling to assisting with large expansions for the Y. “Hicks leads the rest of the maintenance department with kindness and respect, and overall he represents the values the YMCA of Philadelphia and Vicinity stands for each day,” Bruce Appel, facilities and active older adults coordinator for the Abington Y, said.
