The Abington Fire Department held its annual Service Learning Day program for Abington Senior High School students at its training facility last Friday. The event is aimed at teaching students the importance of community involvement and allows the fire department the chance to recruit young people to volunteer as fire fighters. About 30 students participated. The students had the opportunity to operate fire hoses to knock down traffic cones, use fire extinguishers to put out controlled fires and suit up with helmets, boots, jackets and other firefighting gear before heading into the department’s training facility that was filled with non-toxic smoke. The Abington Township Fire Department gave young people participating in the 24-Hour Relay Challenge on Saturday a chance to learn about volunteer firefighting through hands-on demonstrations. Check out more on the Abington 24-Hour Relay Challenge. Relay participants and stopped by the fire department’s tent at Memorial Field and try on helmets, boots, jackets and other firefighting gear. During a special 10th anniversary ceremony to remember and reflect upon the events of Sept. 11, members of the Abington Township community took a moment to thank the first responders who give their time and sacrificed their safety to keep others out of harm's way. The anniversary of the terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of over 300 emergency responders, was a fitting time to honor the commitment and dedication of the firefighters, police and EMTs. Among those who were honored at the emotional ceremony held at Our Lady Help of Christians Church were the five fire companies of the Abington Township Fire Department. Jenkintown's Independent and Pioneer Fire companies, and the Rockledge Fire Co. were also honored at the ceremony. …
