What's Mad Mex's Most Popular Dish?

This popular Mexican restaurant serves up a wide variety, but what is its top

They dish up their fair share of fajitas, burritos and enchiladas, but there is only one dish that takes the top spot. Mad Mex restaurant, located at 2862 W. Moreland Road, in Willow Grove, might be one of Abington Township's best kept secrets. When you roll up to its oversized wooden doors, it might be hard to tell even where to get in. However, a pull on the giant brass cross symbol will lead you to a wide variety of Mexican dishes. Dave Brinlee, manager of the location, said it is one dish that keeps the guests coming in.  "Fish tacos," Brinlee said is his most popular dish. "The grilled mahi sell more, but we also make a fried tilapia." Grilled mahi fish tacos sell for $14, while the fried tilapia is $12. Brinlee said the average price…

Off-[Putting] Waivers?

An Abington Commissioner seems bothered by the possibility of the township waiving a fee.

The waiver of a fire alarm fee sparked some conversation at this week’s public safety committee meeting. The Abington Public Safety Committee on Wednesday approved a motion waiving a permit fee for the Abington School District. The school district is planning on installing a new fire alarm system at the junior high school. The estimated cost of the fire alarm — which would be an upgrade and would be integrated into the current system — comes in at about $620,000. The bid is scheduled to be awarded later in the month. The township, should it choose to waive the fee, would be out about $15,500. Commissioner and public safety committee member Dennis Zappone voted “no” on the motion. “If a little old lady has to fix her sidewalk, she has to …

What Are the Best Sellers at Run Around?

What sells best at this Roslyn sporting goods store?

Run Around Athletic Footware and Apparel, located in the Roslyn Valley Shopping Center at Easton and Woodland roads, offers a pretty wide variety of sporting goods. But what sells the best? "Running shoes," said Jordan Nicgorski, team sales manager. "We have every brand." The shop's manager said that other popular sellers included basketball shoes and anything "of the Jordan brand." Under Armour sportswear for women also does quite well, according to the shop. Nicgorski said that the store is constantly offering in-store promotions. To stay updated with the latest, he recommends "Liking" the store's Facebook page. You can do so by clicking here. Meet the New Commish

Abington’s Ward 12 Gets a New Commissioner

The Abington Board of Commissioners at a special meeting last night elected a commissioner to replace Carol DiJoseph, who retired at the end of last year. The Board elected Thomas John Farren Sr., a Louise Road resident, by a vote of 9-5.  There were two nominations for DiJoseph’s replacement: Commissioner Dennis Zappone nominated Farren and commissioner John Spiegelman nominated Joe Smith. The vote went to Farren first, and he got the majority. The vote went down party lines with all of the Republicans supporting Farren. District Justice Juanita Price swore in the new commissioner, who stood with his wife and children, and then Farren quickly got to work, sitting in on the public works and code enforcement committee meetings. Farren is …

New Board Order

The Abington Board of Commissioners elects new leadership.

With the resignation of Abington Board of Commissioners President Carol DiJoseph late last month [see story here], the board needed to take care of some housekeeping. At its meeting last night, the board elected a new president and vice president. There were two nominations for president; commissioner Dennis Zappone nominated Myers and commissioner John Spiegelman nominated commissioner Steven Kline. “I feel commissioner Kline has, under many circumstances, including the Wawa hearing and the non-discrimination ordinance, taken a very tough leadership role in the face of adversity and opposition,” Spiegelman said.    Kline, reading a statement, said that he would “bring the board to a new direction” and would help create a “sustainable …

Abington Talks Budget Tonight

There's a $484K budget gap to work out.

The Abington Board of Commissioners will hold a budget presentation tonight at the township building.  Last week, the board of commissioners approved a motion adopting a preliminary general fund budget for 2013 of $34.32 million; this includes an unfunded difference of about $483,800. Approving the preliminary budget is merely procedural, and is keeping in line with the First Class Township code; it's not binding.  Should these figures stand, the general purpose millage rate would increase by 0.09241 to 3.42251 mills; the fire millage rate would increase by 0.050667 mills to 0.639667. A homeowner with a house assessed at $150,000 would pay $609 in annual taxes, up about $21 over last year; a homeowner with a home assessed at $200,000 …

PODS and Dumpsters: On Notice in Abington

Abington cracks down on rogue portable storage units.

Do you know someone with a POD, Dumpster or other portable storage unit on his or her property? That person’s going to need a permit. The Abington Board of Commissioners last night unanimously approved a motion requiring permits for the placement of portable storage units in the township. According to the ordinance, anyone looking to place one of these units on his or her property must apply for a permit from the code enforcement department. The permit lasts for 30 days. Though there is no fee for the initial permit, it will cost $25 to extend the permit for 30 days, with a maximum of 90 days. Abington Director of Planning and Code Enforcement Larry Matteo said the ordinance is safety issue. Matteo said there was an instance of a …

More Without Power Since Wednesday Morning

Still about 15K without power in Abington

Abington Township Manager Michael LeFevre said earlier this afternoon that while PECO crews are working to restore power to Abington residents, the number of people without power is higher than yesterday. LeFevre said that about 20,000 people were without power yesterday; that number was down to 13,700 this morning, but crept up to about 15,000 people this afternoon. It’s likely due to additional tree debris falling on power lines, he said. Crews were working to first clear roads near the hospitals, schools and fire companies. “And if there’s an outage that affects 200 people, and there is an outage that affects 50 people, crews will fix the larger outage first,” LeFevre said. LeFevre suggested that residents call PECO if they don’t have…

The Abington Board of Commissioners on Thursday awarded the seventh annual Robert W. Montgomery Environmental Leadership Award to Charles and Viola Carter of Willow Grove.  Commissioner Wayne Luker said the Carters — who are relatively new to the township, having lived here only 14 years — are committed and dedicated volunteers who have helped foster responsible development, beautification projects and park cleanups. Luker: “In that short span of time, they have committed and dedicated all of their time and energy to improving not only Ward 5, but all of the communities in Abington Township.” See the video.
