Abington School Board: PSSA, AYP Update

The Abington School Board will meet at 7:30 p.m.

  According to the Abington School Board draft agenda, school officials will provide an update on how students in the district fared in the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) tests. They will also provide an update on Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). For more information and data on the PSSA and AYP, visit the state’s website here. Abington Schools are ‘Pink Slime’ Free

Superintendent’s office: No finely textured beef used in school lunch programs

  In a recent letter to parents, the Abington School District Superintendent’s Office said that its food service provider, Chartwells, does not use finely textured beef; the letter said that Chartwells produced confirmation that its meat suppliers — Silver Springs Inc. and AdvancePierre Foods — do not use the product, which is more commonly known as “pink slime.” According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, “Lean Finely Textured Beef is a meat product derived from a process which separates fatty pieces from beef trimmings to reduce the overall fat content.” A spokesman for Giant Food Stores said in an interview last month that the product is manufactured by harvesting lean tissue that is not reachable by a knife. Abington School Board Meeting, Draft Agenda Posted

  The Abington School Board will meet tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the administration building.  According to the draft agenda, which can be seen here, or in the pdf section, the board will discuss a memorandum of understanding with the crossing guards; changes to secondary classes; and an agreement extension with the Abington Transportation Association.

Weiss Calls it a Career

The Abington School Board member steps down, but leaves with a new title.

  Abington School Board Director Silvia Shirley Weiss attended her last school board meeting yesterday. She will be stepping down Dec. 5 after a 5-term run. Weiss, 78, spoke about her life during the board members’ opening statements; she thanked her husband, Jack, for driving her to almost all of the meetings over the 20-year span. She was later given the title “Abington School Board Director Emeritus.” Weiss is the third person to receive the honor. State Rep.
