Superintendent: 'I think we accomplished the [school board's] goals'
The Abington School Board last night approved the district’s 2012-13 budget; there will be no tax increase. The board unanimously passed the $133.47 million budget; the budget is up 4.55 percent over the 2011-12 installment, but the millage rate stays at 27.80. That means a home assessed at $141,000 will pay $3,920 annually. And, if you register with the state as a homestead, you’ll see a flat reduction of your tax bill to the tune of $205 — regardless of the assessed value of your home. “There have been no cuts in programming, no pay-to-play, no decreases in any way — frankly, there have been some increases — all while having a 0 percent increase for the third year in a row,” Abington School District Superintendent Amy Sichel said. “So …

According to the Abington School District proposed final budget, the 2012-13 budget is up 4.55 percent over last year, bringing the total to $133.47 million. However, Abington School District Business Administrator Chris Lionetti said in an interview last month that the board is not proposing a tax increase for the 2012-13 budget; he added that it didn’t increase taxes last year either. The current millage rate is 27.80, meaning a house assessed at $141,000, would pay $3,920 annually. In the last five years, tax increases have been under 2 percent. Last year, the school board used $5.58 million in allocated fund balance to close the gap on the 2011-12 budget; there is $10.27 million in allocated fund balance in the 2012-13 proposed …

Board President: ‘I’d like to see a zero percent tax increase this year’
The Abington School Board approved the district’s 2012-2013 proposed preliminary budget last night. If it sounds like the process got started early, it did. Last year, the school board approved the proposed prelim in late January. However, in accordance with the Pennsylvania Tax Payer Relief Act of 2006, more commonly known as Act 1, each school district is required to hold four budget presentations, according to Abington Superintendent Amy Sichel. The 2012-13 proposed preliminary budget is up 5.13 percent over the 2011-12 budget and stands at $134.2 million. Abington School District business administrator Chris Lionetti presented a budget that assumed a 1.7 percent increase in real estate taxes — a figure handed down by the Pennsylvania…

School Board member Barry Stupine: 'We’d have to be insane to change the leadership of our board.'
The Abington School Board looks similar to the way it did prior to the Dec. 5 reorganization meeting. Last night, incumbent school board directors Andrea Lawful-Trainer, Michele Tinsman, Jeannette Maitin and Susan Arnhold were sworn in, in addition to newcomer Daniel Kaye. Abington School Board President Pro Tempore Barry Stupine read the oath, and then congratulated the five newly appointed directors. The board’s president and vice president remain the same — Raymond McGarry and Jeffrey Bates, respectively. Arnhold nominated McGarry for president. Reading from a statement, Arnhold said, “Mr. McGarry’s dedication to the Abington School District has served our students and taxpayers well. He served with distinction as vice president for…

The Abington School Board member steps down, but leaves with a new title.
Abington School Board Director Silvia Shirley Weiss attended her last school board meeting yesterday. She will be stepping down Dec. 5 after a 5-term run. Weiss, 78, spoke about her life during the board members’ opening statements; she thanked her husband, Jack, for driving her to almost all of the meetings over the 20-year span. She was later given the title “Abington School Board Director Emeritus.” Weiss is the third person to receive the honor. State Rep. Josh Shapiro talked about Weiss’ career, and presented her with a citation from the state for her years of service. “I would feel as though I would not be doing justice to Shirley Weiss if I just rattled off her accomplishments,” Shapiro said. “To me, Shirley Weiss, is someone who …

I am surprised there is no tax hike. I sort of expect one! I would rather small, steady tax increases than one or two large hikes. As a tax payer-- I am 100% for supporting our schools. After all, the quality of the school district has a direct impact on my home value!   more ›
