Abington Readies for [Downgraded] Snow

The Abington Public Works Department is ready for the white stuff.

Abington Superintendent of Highways Angelo Pontelandolfo said today that staffers at the Abington Public Works Department have been preparing for the storm all day … and while he was speaking, he got an update on the weather. “It’s already been downgraded,” he said. “We have a 30 percent chance of getting one inch of snow.” Regardless, the township is ready. “There are 17 trucks loaded with salt and they’re ready to head out the door,” Pontelandolfo said.   And he added that the all of the available trucks have been fitted with plows. As for the salt left? Pontelandolfo said the township has about 2,000 tons remaining.

i guess with the storm being down graded , the township workers wont be getting hefty overtime pay and the township will spare us another tax increase . i wonder what it cost the township in overtime pay when we get a major snow storm ?   more ›

Five-Day-a-Week Trash Coming to Abington

Forget that Monday morning walk with the gray bin ...

Abington Public Works Director Ed Micciolo said in a presentation this week that the township will likely be heading toward trash pickup five days a week.  Micciolo, giving a presentation at the public works committee meeting, said having trash picked up every weekday rather than four times a week will be more efficient, reducing daily collection routes. The changeover would happen April 15.  Right now, every resident puts his or her paper waste — the gray bin — out on Monday and has his or her trash and recyclables out on the neighborhood’s designated trash day. Under the new plan, residents would have trash, paper, recyclables and yard waste picked up on the same day — their neighborhood’s designated trash day. Different trucks would …

Is Your Street on Abington's List to be Paved?

See which streets are on the preliminary proposal to be paved in Abington next year.

The Abington Public Works Department will be paving several roads as part of its proposed 2013 capital program. According to preliminary budget figures, the cost to pave these roads – about 3.6 miles – is a shade under $378,000. Who determines which roads are de-potholed?  Abington Public Works Director Ed Micciolo said during last night's budget workshop that every road in the township is assessed and evaluated each year by himself and his crew. The worst roads are narrowed down to what the budget allows; he added that his department tries to pave roads in clusters to get the best "bang for the buck." Board of Commissioners President Carol DiJoseph said jokingly that the board could spend all night arguing which roads are in most need …

when aqua replaced the water line in our street they did a better job of paving the area they dug up and repaired , when the township repaved our street a year later , they should have left our street alone ,it was in better condition before they did the repaving job. SUSQUEHANNA ROAD if iam not mistaken is a state road and why is it the township wont go after penn dot to make the necessary …   more ›

Bird Protection Services ... By Willow Hill

The elementary school's student council gets some signage for the geese

Old Welsh Road can be a dangerous place … for geese. That was the thought behind Willow Hill Elementary School Student Council’s most recent community service project. The council helped organize the installation of two goose-crossing signs on Old Welsh Road next to Crestmont Park and across from the Cheesecake Factory restaurant at the mall. Well — the signs don’t say “goose-crossing,” it’s just a silhouette of a bird against a yellow sign … but you know the ones. Members of the student council, wearing knit hats and gloves, walked from their school over to the park this morning and helped install one of the signs with the help of the Abington Public Works Department. Student council president Jessica Miles said she lives in the area …

Good call, Ed Micciolo, not having the kids pay for the sign. Look how proud they are in that last shot! All smiles. Very sweet, Abington.   more ›

A Section of Horace to be Milled Monday

Milling will begin on Horace Avenue starting early Monday, followed by milling on Highland Avenue.

Horace Avenue, between Old York Road and Highland Avenue, will be getting a facelift starting Monday Aug. 1, according to Abington Public Works Director Ed Micciolo. The portion of the road, which sits between the township building and part of Abington Memorial Hospital, will be milled starting at about 7 a.m. on Monday. The milling will continue through Tuesday, Micciolo said. Then, Highland Avenue, between Horace Avenue and Old York Road, will be milled starting Wednesday and continuing through Friday of the same week. The milling process uses a grinder to remove the top 2-and-a-half inches of pavement. According to Micciolo, Aqua Pennsylvania recently installed new water lines under Horace and Highland avenues — hence the need for …
