Washington Lane A fire gutted a house on Washington Lane between Fairy Hill and Red Rambler roads early this morning. The sole occupant of the house woke up when he started coughing and after he heard a smoke detector, according to Abington Fire Marshal Ken Clark. He escaped unharmed. At about 11 a.m. today, a man who identified himself as the owner of the house was walking around the property with what looked like a contractor. Most of the windows of the house were boarded up. Initially, he said he would comment, but then declined. “It’s awkward, it’s really an awkward situation,” the man said. “I feel queasy, and I’d rather not talk about it.” A caller reported “heavy smoke” at the property at 1:41 a.m., Clark said. Pizza purchases turn into safety equipment for the Roslyn Fire Co.

In February, Riviera Pizza in Roslyn donated $1 from every pizza it sold to the Roslyn Fire Co.—and the Roslyn VFW matched the donation. Check out last month's story here. On March 2, representatives from Riviera Pizza and the Roslyn VFW each presented checks to the Roslyn Fire Co. for $1,000. The $2,000 will be used to purchase safety equipment for the volunteer fire fighters.
