The Weldon Fire Co. fire fighter died following an injury he suffered last month.
Abington Fire Marshal Ken Clark said today that Weldon Fire Fighter David Kelble Jr. died yesterday following an injury he suffered Nov. 21 in Lower Southampton. Kelble, of Glenside, was 32. He leaves behind his wife Jacqueline and two children, a 3-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son. According to Clark, Kelble was working at his regular job, with a tree company, when he suffered a traumatic head injury. He was transported to St. Mary Medical Center in Bucks County and died Sunday. “Evidently he was dispatched to Lower Southampton where there was a tree leaning against another tree. There was a crew rigging it up and a large branch broke and hit him directly in the head. He never regained consciousness,” Clark said. Kelble was an …

A fire last night in the Willow Grove section of Abington was under control quickly, but left five people homeless.
Fire and EMS crews responded to a fire last night at a house in the 1900 block of Osbourne Avenue in the Willow Grove section of Abington. The call came in at about 8:45 p.m. Abington Assistant Fire Marshal John Rohrer said the fire was under control quickly — about 10 minutes — and said that no one was home during the fire. “Roslyn Chief Dale Jonas and two police officers were among the first to arrive on the scene,” Rohrer said. “There was heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear windows of the house. It was a quick knock down and there were no injuries.” A North Hills resident actually placed the call to 9-1-1. Danielle Calci said she was leaving her friend’s house at about 8:45 p.m. when she noticed the house across the street was on …

The mock crash, an annual tradition at Abington High School the day before the senior prom, is a gory reminder to make good decisions.
A fake car crash on the campus of Abington Senior High School this morning left one person “dead” and several others injured. The “driver” was then “arrested” for what appeared to be DUI. Yep. The quotes mean it didn’t really happen. But school officials and emergency responders are hoping that the grisly, albeit simulated scene resonates with the students. The school has been holding the simulated crash the day before the senior prom for the last 20 years. Former Abington Police Officer Joe Conover was on the scene, which was the road that separates the gym from the football and field hockey fields. Conover, who retired two years ago, helped create the mock crash along with teacher Doug Moister. Moister is retiring this year. “I wanted to…

The Abington Township Fire Department held its annual student recruitment day last Friday at Abington Senior High School. “This is one of our most important events because we can demonstrate the importance of the fire department, as well as present students with the opportunity to join us in serving the community,” ATFD Community Service Specialist Jeffrey M. Glynn said. “It’s a way to say, ‘Hello, we’re the Abington Township Fire Department.’” The annual event allows 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade students to see what it takes to become a firefighter. Those interested in learning more about the programs offered by the ATFD had the chance to venture outside for some hands-on activities, including ladder demonstrations, and fire hose …

The Abington Board of Commissioners recognized the Abington Township Fire Department Thursday for receiving the 2011 Chief Robert W. Little Jr. Memorial Fire Safety Education Award -- given out by the Firemen's Association of the State of Pennsylvania (FASP). Jerry Poland, Director of FASP, attended the meeting to present Abington Fire Department representatives with a plaque, and to recognize the department. Poland said the fire department’s nomination stood out from the many others submitted, adding that the Abington Fire Department weaves fire prevention and safety education into everything it does. The Fire Safety Education Award is presented to the top nine fire companies or departments (three per division) who have done an …

Abington Fire Co. kicks off Fire Prevention Week
The Abington Fire Company got Fire Prevention Week started last night, opening its doors to the public. Abington fire fighters milled around the entrance to the Abington Fire Co. on Horace Avenue just before 6 p.m. About an hour later, the firehouse was filled with residents — many of them children and their parents. The event was part of the national Fire Prevention Week, sponsored by the National Fire Prevention Association, which runs through Oct. 15. However, Abington Fire Co. Chief John Bothwell said open houses at Abington Fire Co. have been happening for more than 40 years. “Each [fire company in Abington] has its own open house during the week,” Bothwell said, standing in front of a polished fire truck in the station... …

During a special 10th anniversary ceremony to remember and reflect upon the events of Sept. 11, members of the Abington Township community took a moment to thank the first responders who give their time and sacrificed their safety to keep others out of harm's way. The anniversary of the terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of over 300 emergency responders, was a fitting time to honor the commitment and dedication of the firefighters, police and EMTs. Among those who were honored at the emotional ceremony held at Our Lady Help of Christians Church were the five fire companies of the Abington Township Fire Department. Jenkintown's Independent and Pioneer Fire companies, and the Rockledge Fire Co. were also honored at the ceremony. …

A family's 9-1-1 call led to a quick response from several local fire companies to rescue a man trapped in a swift current of flooded woods.
By 11 p.m. Aug. 27, Bobby Garrett noticed his basement was quickly flooding. Garrett’s house, located at 3145 Davisville Road, lies directly across Pennypack Creek’s, which was the source of the floodwater. He said that Davisville Road looked like a river, and that his backyard, which leads to a dense wooded area, looked like a lake. As a musician, Garrett and his family went to work transporting the musical equipment to higher ground. “It was fast and furious,” Garrett said. “Drum sets, keyboards, guitars, everything we could lift up the stairs … it was pretty heavy.” Garrett said they worked for two hours straight, when he first heard a man yelling for assistance. “Right around midnight to 1 a.m. is when I heard the cry for help,” …

The Abington Township Fire Department holds its fifth annual Service Learning Day program in hopes of attracting volunteers.
About 30 Abington Senior High School students ran into a building filled with smoke … and the Abington Township Fire Department hopes that some of them will do it again. The Abington Fire Department held its fifth annual Service Learning Day program at its Public Safety Training Facility on Florey Lane Friday morning. “It’s not a training program; it’s more of a exploratory program for the students,” Abington Fire Department Accreditation Manager David Schramm said. “They sign up for it, and it’s something of a recruitment event for the fire department.” The students were taken through several “stations” at the facility, including a display and explanation of the equipment on the truck; a hands-on fire extinguisher display; a hose display…
