Abington Budget Process Moves Forward

... with a proposed increase in the fire tax

Comfortable. That’s how many of the Abington Township Commissioners felt about how the 2013 budget deficit will likely be covered. Last night, at a budget workshop, the consensus of the Abington Board of Commissioners was to move forward with the budget process and advertise a final budget hearing that will include a 0.05 millage increase in the fire tax and the use of $315,000 of fund balance to cover capital projects … and a $484,000 budget gap. There is about $5.1 million in the unallocated fund balance.  The proposed tax increase would bump the fire tax from 0.589 mills to 0.639 mills — and would generate about $171,300, though the money could only be used for fire-related expenses. The millage increase means a homeowner with a home …

Open [Fire] House

Abington Fire Co. kicks off Fire Prevention Week

The Abington Fire Company got Fire Prevention Week started last night, opening its doors to the public. Abington fire fighters milled around the entrance to the Abington Fire Co. on Horace Avenue just before 6 p.m. About an hour later, the firehouse was filled with residents — many of them children and their parents. The event was part of the national Fire Prevention Week, sponsored by the National Fire Prevention Association, which runs through Oct. 15. However, Abington Fire Co. Chief John Bothwell said open houses at Abington Fire Co. have been happening for more than 40 years. “Each [fire company in Abington] has its own open house during the week,” Bothwell said, standing in front of a polished fire truck in the station... …

Tree Damages House on Edgehill

There were no injuries.

A large piece of a tree fell onto a house in the 1400 block of Edgehill Road, near Curtis and Clearfield avenues, yesterday at about 1 p.m. There was significant damage to the house, but no one was injured. It appeared that a colony of bees was living in a portion of one of the tree branches; it’s possible that the bees weakened the branch, causing it to fall. There were several bees around the property.   -- Information and photos courtesy of Tom Kirk

Abington Fire Companies Assist in Davisville Water Rescue

A family's 9-1-1 call led to a quick response from several local fire companies to rescue a man trapped in a swift current of flooded woods.

By 11 p.m. Aug. 27, Bobby Garrett noticed his basement was quickly flooding. Garrett’s house, located at 3145 Davisville Road, lies directly across Pennypack Creek’s, which was the source of the floodwater. He said that Davisville Road looked like a river, and that his backyard, which leads to a dense wooded area, looked like a lake. As a musician, Garrett and his family went to work transporting the musical equipment to higher ground. “It was fast and furious,” Garrett said. “Drum sets, keyboards, guitars, everything we could lift up the stairs … it was pretty heavy.” Garrett said they worked for two hours straight, when he first heard a man yelling for assistance. “Right around midnight to 1 a.m. is when I heard the cry for help,” …
