Bring Your Old Drugs to Abington, Anytime

Abington gets one of 10 permanent prescription drug collection boxes in Montco.

  If you’ve got some old prescription drugs taking up valuable real estate in your cabinet, take them to Abington. The Abington Police Department recently received one of 10 permanent prescription drug collection boxes placed in Montgomery County. The green, mailbox-like container sits in the vestibule off of the lobby near the records room and is accessible to people 24/7, according to Abington Police Deputy Chief John Livingood.  “If someone comes in later tonight to the records room, and that’s closed, they can go across to the operations center, push a button and say, ‘I’ve got drugs,’ and they’ll come out and let them in,” Livingood said. Philly Man Arrested on Felony Drug Charges in Abington

An unsecured exhaust led to the 38-year-old man's arrest.

Abington Police arrested a Philadelphia man who allegedly had suspected marijuana and small bags commonly used to package marijuana in his vehicle. Bruce Bennett, 38, of Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia, was arrested March 2 at about 1 p.m. near the corner of Township Line Road and Zane Avenue  following a traffic stop for having tinted glass on his blue Mercury Grand Marquis and for having an unsecured exhaust pipe, police said. According to police, Bennett said there was a small amount of marijuana in the back seat of the vehicle. Police said they found a paper bag containing a sandwich bag, which contained six black-tinted Ziploc bags containing suspected marijuana. Alleged Coke Dealer Arrested in North Hills

The Philadelphia resident has a lengthy criminal history.

  Abington Police arrested a Philadelphia man last month on felony drug charges in North Hills. Chavez Darryl ‘Swerve’ Brown, 28, of Arlington Street, Philadelphia, was arrested Jan. 5 just before 3 p.m. following a traffic stop near the corner of Spruce and Tennis avenues while he was driving a Dodge Magnum.  According to police, Brown was in possession of $615 and a search of the Magnum yielded a knotted plastic bag containing marijuana and four cell phones. A more thorough search at the Abington Police station yielded a plastic knotted bag in Brown’s underwear, which contained 24 small purple Ziploc baggies containing confirmed cocaine, police said. ‘Known Drug Offender’ in Abington Sentenced to State Time

The man, from the Willow Grove section of Abington, was sentenced following an arrest in July.

  Leon Roselle Liggins, 42, of the 1700 block of North Hills Avenue, Willow Grove, was sentenced to state prison time earlier this week.  Liggins was sentenced to one-and-a-half to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to felony cocaine possession with intent to deliver stemming from a July arrest, according to a phillyburbs.com story. According to police, Liggins was arrested July 28 after police conducted surveillance on him; police executed a search warrant on his house and two vehicles.   DUI and reckless endangerment … Laurie Gillespie, 38, of Huntingdon Road, Abington, was arrested Dec. 5 at 5:45 p.m. following a crash in the corner of Old York and Rockwell roads after Gillespie turned left in front of another motorist who was driving southbound on Old York Road, police said. According to police, the occupants of the car driving southbound were transported to Abington Memorial Hospital for their injuries. Gillespie had glassy and bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol, police said. She was also unaware of her surroundings, unsteady on her feet and appeared highly intoxicated.   Possession of a small amount of marijuana … Mykhaylo Gopka, 20, of Oliver Road, Huntingdon Valley, was arrested July 7 at 12:05 a.m. at a DUI checkpoint in the 700 block of Huntingdon Pike, police said. According to police, Gopka’s vehicle smelled of marijuana and there was a marijuana grinder in plain view.
