Abington Dems ‘Sign Up’ for a Party

The Abington-Rockledge Democratic Committee holds a hybrid petition signing/food drive.

The Abington-Rockledge Democratic Committee held a candidate petition signing party Tuesday night at the Brownstone Building at Sunrise of Abington. The event was designed for the Democrats to get their guys on the primary ballot.  “This is kind of what we’ve been doing for the last three years,” ARDC Chairman Michael Barbiero said. “On the first night of petition signing, we’ve been having this party to sort of jump start the campaign.” A candidate for township commissioner or school board needs 10 signatures to be on the primary ballot. Tuesday was the first day in a three-week period in which prospective candidates may gather signatures to be placed on the ballot — the deadline is March 12, according to Barbiero. And this year is rather…

Abington Dems to Hold Petition Signing Party, Food Drive

The Abington-Rockledge Democratic Committee is looking for signatures ... and food donations.

Tonight, the Abington-Rockledge Democratic Committee will hold its annual Petition Signing Party to help its candidates get on the ballot for the May 21 Primary. The event will be held at The Brownstone at Sunrise of Abington at 7:30 p.m. The ARDC is also incorporating a food drive for the local food cupboard that is in dire need of donations — the Abington Food Cupboard. With over 20,000 registered Democratic voters in Abington and Rockledge, this year’s event has drawn statewide attention and will include Democratic candidates and incumbents for local seats on the Abington Township Board of Commissioners; the school board; the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Judge; and the Democratic candidate for the Pennsylvania State Superior …

Letter to the Editor: Former Commish Weighs in on Dean Replacement

Former Abington Commissioner Ernie Peacock on the replacement process

As reported previously, Madeleine Dean, Abington Township Commissioner, Ward 7, is resigning her position effective Aug. 15. The process of choosing a replacement was discussed elsewhere by Board President Carol DiJoseph. The President is quoted as saying that "the process of choosing a candidate lies in the domain of Ward 7" and that "both Democratic and Republican leaders in the community discuss a potential candidate" before presenting a candidate to the board. DiJoseph is then quoted as saying that "as of this time she has not heard any word from Ward 7, nor does she know their plans." Perhaps President DiJoseph was misquoted. I hope so, because as she well knows, the process as she described it is fiction. The Abington Township …

Abington Helps Move the Needle to 'F'

Abington Commissioner John Spiegelman organizes a food drive along with the ARDC and Girl Scout Troop 780 to benefit Inter-Faith Housing Alliance's pantry.

Kristen and Jay Petroff were among the first people to walk into Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Abington Saturday morning. Both were holding paper shopping bags. The contents? Everything from pasta to toothpaste. “Where’s Speegs?” Kristen said. “Speegs” (Abington Commissioner John Spiegelman) was in the Inter-Faith Housing Alliance’s pantry, which is housed in the second floor — a bit farther into the church. He was running a food drive in conjunction with the Abington Rockledge Democratic Committee and Girl Scout Troop 780, out of Willow Grove.   By 10 a.m., the cupboard had an extra 70 bags of food; at 10:45 a.m. Spiegelman said, “We’re rocking past 100 bags now!” Fifty of those bags were dropped off at Spiegelman’s residence. The …
