Classic Holiday Hijinks Abound in Act II's 'Oh, What Fun!'

Veteran showman Tony Braithwaite unleashes laughs in this vaudeville-style ode to the classic holiday variety show.

Those of you longing for the Golden Age of Hollywood holiday specials are getting an early gift this year in Oh, What Fun!, playing now through Dec. 30 at the Act II Playhouse in Ambler (with added shows on Jan. 19 and 20, due to popular demand.) This vaudeville-style variety show, courtesy of Act II's Artistic Director Tony Braithwaite, is packed full of music, comedy and even a bit of soft shoe. Braithwaite is joined in this faced-paced romp by Act II veterans Howie Brown, Will Dennis and music man and tap talent Sonny Leo. The show clocks in at just over 70 minutes with no intermission. 'Sylvia' ... Speak!

The Act II Playhouse in Ambler opens its season with 'Sylvia,' a play about a dog portrayed by a human.

Ambler’s Act II Playhouse will open its 2011-2012 season with Sylvia, a romantic comedy written by A.R. Gurney and first produced in 1995. Act II’s associate artistic director Harriet Power directs the play. Power has a 21-year history of directing in Philadelphia, working at most of the theatres here as well as theatres across the U.S. She has directed 20 productions at Villanova University, where she’s also a theatre professor. “Sylvia was a play I've long wanted to do,” Power said. “The entire Act II team loves the play and gave it an immediate green light. “It’s got just about everything we look for in a season-opener — a great story, it's wonderfully funny, it has some surprising and very moving moments, and it takes advantage of what…
