Letter to the Editor: Mattiacci Reflects on Loss of Specter

Nick Mattiacci is the Republican candidate for State Rep. in the 153rd Legislative District.

To the editor: Like so many, I was saddened to hear of the passing of United States Senator Arlen Specter. I humbly write this to honor him because in this day of partisan divide, a politician who stands for ideals over ideology should be celebrated.  Senator Specter will be categorized by some as a political opportunist however, I always envisioned him as a leader who had the moral courage to take a stand for his beliefs. I always enjoyed watching Senator Specter campaign because whether he speaking to senior citizens or high school seniors, Senator Specter had the uncanny ability to connect with each individual. What I respected most about Senator Specter was that he boldly held the belief that being on the right and being right were …

Letter to the Editor: Dean Reminiscent of Shapiro

.

To the Editor: I would like to encourage my fellow senior citizens, especially those with grandchildren, to vote for Madeleine Dean in the Special Election on April 24 to fill Josh Shapiro’s State Representative seat.  I am a proud Independent, and I am equally proud to have Miss Dean as my Ward 7 Commissioner. Maybe she hasn’t been Commissioner for very long, but I’ve seen her do more in her first hundred days than I’ve seen the entire Board of Commissioners do in a year. Anyone who can tackle the mess at the Colonade Apartments, as Miss Dean has done, can tackle the mess in Harrisburg. In addition, I am very appreciative of how she has kept me informed of important local matters through her clear and timely emails. This communication is …

Letter to the Editor: Blackjack to Help Fund Special Education Programs

Republican candidate for the 153rd legislative district Nick Mattiacci proposes a different way to use state gaming revenue.

To the editor: As candidate to for State Representative, I would like to announce my proposal for dedicating a portion of the Pennsylvania state tax revenue generated from casino table games to fund special education programs throughout the state. Currently, our commonwealth taxes table games at 16 percent. Two percent of that tax goes to the local share fund, with the rest — 14 percent — going into the state’s “general fund.” Under my proposal, that 14 percent would instead be dedicated to funding special education programs throughout Pennsylvania. Under current projections, Pennsylvania can expect approximately $100 million annually in table game revenue.     Special education is a subject of major importance to many residents of …

The League Hosts Dean and Mattiacci

Madeleine Dean and Nick Mattiacci faced off for the 153rd district at the township building on Tuesday night.

Abington Commissioner Madeleine Dean and attorney Nick Mattiacci met for another debate Tuesday night at the Abington Township Building. Both are vying for the state representative seat vacated by Josh Shapiro in the 153rd legislative district. The event, hosted by the Abington-Cheltenham-Jenkintown League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan civic organization, touched on a few local issues as well as some national, hot-button topics. Dean started off by saying she was a “52-year-old mother, lawyer, former small business owner and teacher at LaSalle University.” She said she has a deep belief in public service and said she has “what I think are life skills” that will help her contribute. In a cheeky fashion, she said she’s interested in …

Notwithstanding the swipe against the former Alaska Governor [whose FNC special on energy-issues, last night, was superb], it is my understanding that the D-party would appoint her replacement [until the term expires] were she to go to Harrisburg [and not as "a U.S. Rep"].   more ›

Dean Seeks to Follow Shapiro's Footsteps

Newly-elected Abington commissioner Madeleine Dean to run for a seat in the 153rd Legislative District

With a special election to fill the vacancy left by Josh Shapiro fewer than 50 days away, Abington commissioner Madeleine Dean is ramping up her efforts to secure a seat as the representative for the 153rd Legislative District. At a crowded fundraiser at LeBus Restaurant in Manayunk, many notable Democrats — including former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell — voiced their support for Dean's campaign and urged voters to play an active role in the special election to be held on April 24. "We don't have a primary fight on the presidential level and the Republicans do," said Marcel Groen, chairman of the Montgomery County Democratic Committee.  "We have to be very aware of the fact that the Republicans may have a significant turnout, but …
