Primarily Speaking, in Abington

Tuesday is the primary election. See who's running and check out a sample ballot for your neck of the woods.

Abington residents will hit the booths Tuesday to select their candidates for the general election. The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Seats for Abington Commissioner, Wards 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14, will be up for election in November. The winner will serve a 4-year term. Ward 7 will also be up for election, though its term is two years. Voters will also choose a tax collector in November. The winner will serve a 4-year term. Though none of the seats is contested in Tuesday’s primary, the candidates are below. Historical Society of Montgomery County to Host Genealogy Workshop

The four-week genealogy workshop is designed for beginners, and will start May 21.

The Historical Society of Montgomery County, located at 1654 Dekalb St. in Norristown, will hold a four-week Genealogy Workshop, from May 21 – June 11. The Tuesday evening workshops will occur from, 7 – 8:30 p.m., and will be lead by genealogist Rose Brown. The workshops are designed for beginning genealogists, who wish to find their roots. According to the Genealogy Society of Pennsylvania website, becoming a new genealogist is an exciting time, from discovering an ancestor’s naturalization papers or locating a long-ago relative in a census. The site goes on to say that genealogy has a special methodology, and the society suggests reaching out to a variety of more experienced genealogists for beginners. The materials for the workshops …

PA Voters Say 'Fix Economy'

The Franklin & Marshall College poll ranks what voters feel is important for the state.

The No. 1 issue that Pennsylvania voters care about is improving the economy, at least according to one poll. The Frankin and Marshall College poll of Pennsylvania voters for May 2013 found that, of 11 possible issues, the one voters said to be most important to them was improving the state’s economy. The poll listed a number of issues and asked voters to rank its importance on a scale of 1 to 10. The top two issues, “improving the state’s economy” and “help create new jobs,” both had a mean score of 8.9 among voters polled. The poll, which was conducted between April 30 and May 5, gathered responses from 526 registered voters, including 265 Democrats, 196 Republicans and 65 Independents. Abington Memorial Cancer Program Earns Outstanding Achievement Award

The hospital’s cancer center was granted a 2012 Outstanding Achievement Award by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

Abington Memorial Hospital’s Rosenfield Cancer Center was one of 79 cancer programs in the country to earn a 2012 Outstanding Achievement Award. The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons granted the award. According to the hospital’s website, The Rosenfield Cancer Center is only one of three such facilities in Pennsylvania to earn the award, which was based on qualitative surveys conducted in 2012. The award is designed to recognize cancer treatment programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. County Judge Hopefuls to Square Off in Primary Election

Two Republicans and two Democrats will be on the ballots of both political parties Tuesday.

  Four Montgomery County residents are hoping to fill two open seats in the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas in January, but the first step is making it past the Primary Election, in which all of the candidates are cross-filed. Republican candidates Sharon Giamporcaro and Maureen Coggins will be on the Republican and Democrat ballots, as will Democrats Steven Tolliver and Gail Weilheimer. Abington Resident Lands Piano Award

Christopher DiCamillo is the inaugural recipient of the Jacobs Music Steinway Award.

Abington resident and Immaculata University music major Christopher DiCamillo has been named the first winner of the Jacobs Music- Steinway Award. The award recognizes a piano student who demonstrates outstanding pianistic ability and a commitment to academic excellence.  DiCamillo will perform and receive his recognition at a concert spotlighting seven music majors at Immaculata’s Memorial Hall on Friday, May 31 at 7:30 p.m.  This inaugural recipient is a student of Steinway artist and concert pianist William Carr, who is Immaculata’s Artist in Residence. Man Steals $400 in Baby Formula, Flees in Cadillac, Police Say: According to a report in the Norristown Patch, police are searching for a man who allegedly stole $400 in Gerber Good Start baby formula from the local Thriftway. Alleged Condiment Crook Nabbed by Police: According to a report in the Lansdale Patch, a booking agent in a three-piece suit was arrested after he allegedly stole condiments from a nearby diner.
