PSU Softball Loses Playoff Opener

Penn State Abington falls to SUNYIT.

  Penn State Abington softball dropped the first game in the opening round of the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Hintz Field on Friday afternoon. After a slow start from Abington, SUNYIT jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of first. Abington managed to stay in contention in the top of third with runners on first and second before senior Mariellen Medernach singled up through the middle, rounding Ashley Quenzer from second for the first run before Cara Fiala came up short at home as SUNYIT's catcher managed to haul in the throw from centerfield for the tag to prevent the tie. SUNYIT continued to do more damage on the turn, as two runs were scored off of Krista Pristera's triple out to right field …

PSU Abington Students Get All-Conference Team Nods

A pitcher, an outfielder and a catcher make the NEAC All-Conference Team

The North Eastern Athletic Conference announced its 2013 softball all-conference selections Thursday. Penn State Abington sophomore pitcher Michaela Drogalis, of Croydon, was selected by the league as the 2013 NEAC South Pitcher of the Year. She was also a first team pick. Senior outfielder Trish Watson, of Bensalem, and junior catcher Shelia O'Hagan, of Willow Grove, both earned second-team honors, while head coach, David Hoch was honored as Coach of the Year after taking Abington to a record of 13-7 against league opponents, qualifying for the NEAC Playoffs for the first time in program history. Head coaches from conference member institutions nominate and then vote on the award. Drogalis had a strong outing on the mound this season, …

Abington Drumline, Color Guard Head to Wildwood

Abington held a practice earlier this week before sending its drumline and colorguard to the All-Chapter Championship in Wildwood, N.J.

Abington will be sending an A-Class drumline and color guard to the Tournament Indoor Association’s (TIA) All-Chapter Championship in Wildwood, N.J. Family members and friends packed the bleachers in the senior high school gym on Tuesday night to watch the respective organizations run through their routines prior to the championships. The drumline's theme was "forever." It performed for about five minutes, sampling many songs containing the word. After the performance, a banner with the word "forever" written over an infinity sign, lit up The drumline’s preliminaries will be held Thursday with finals happening Saturday; the color guard’s preliminaries are on Friday with its finals happening Sunday. Our children have been so very fortunate to be involved with Abington School District's phenomenal music programs. The Color Guard and Drumline had an awesome season! Meadowbrook School Students Comfort Hospital Patients

Students presented hand-made gifts to Abington Memorial Hospital patients.

As part of a community service initiative, 12 Meadowbrook School students accompanied Headmaster David Stephens, along with school representatives, to Abington Memorial Hospital to provide comfort-based gifts to patients. The gifts, presented last week, were created by the students as part of Meadowbrook’s Choose Your Own Adventure Program. “At Meadowbrook, a core component of our educational mission is to ensure that every one of our students understands the importance and value of community service. Our dedicated faculty and staff consistently weave the lessons of humanity toward others throughout the curriculum on a yearlong basis,” Stephens said. High Schools in Montco Top Ranking List

Rankings of the state's high schools put 9 of the county's in the top 50.

When the U.S. News and World Report ranks something, the nation tunes in. This month, the popular magazine ranked the state's high schools. Those in Montgomery County will be happy to hear it was well represented at the top of the list. Of the list's top 50 schools, nine of the county's high schools were there the list, which put the county highest in the state. Of the ranked schools, the following were in the top 50: No. 8 -- Radnor High School, Radnor Township No. 9 -- Lower Moreland High School, Huntingdon Valley No. 17 -- Lower Merion High School, Ardmore No. 24 -- Wissahickon Senior High School, Ambler No. 28 -- Upper Dublin High School, Fort Washington No. 31 -- Plymouth-Whitemarsh High, Plymouth Meeting No. 38 -- Souderton Area …

Abington Senior High Wins Golden Globe [World Language] Award

The school is one of 10 statewide to receive the distinction.

Abington Senior High School won the Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association’s Golden Globe Award. It recognizes schools across the state that excel in 11 criteria established by PSMLA to evaluate language programs. The award is part of the PSMLA Exemplary Program. See more about the award here. Abington is one of 10 schools in Pennsylvania that has earned the award, which places importance on language study. The school will also receive $250 to be used by the high school’s world language program. According to the PSMLA website, 73 percent of Abington students in grades 9 through 12 are enrolled in world education classes; and the school offers French, Spanish and German AP courses as well as an AP Latin independent study. Abington High School Wins Enviro Award

The school’s ‘H20 for Life’ club helps land the school the Environmental Community Service Award and $5,000.

The Abington Senior High School H2O for Life Club received the Environmental Community Service Award from NBC, WAWA and the Law Firm of Manko, Gold, Katcher & Fox, LLP last week. The club had to apply for the award, coming up with different ways in which they would use $5,000 to “promote service that focuses on environmental and quality of life issues.” The club won the $5,000.  The Club’s 50 or so members, who already teach a class called “Watershed Citizenship,” said they would hold the high school water summit for at least two more years to educate other high school students about local and global water issues; work with the Abington Environmental Advisory Council to fund additional Riparian buffers; launch an anti-littering campaign …

Manor Adds to the Canopy

The area between Manor College and the Sisters of Saint Basil the Great will soon be more … woodsy.

Dozens of volunteers got their hands dirty and their shoes a little muddy on Monday afternoon — Earth Day 2013. Volunteers from the Sisters of Saint Basil the Great, Manor College and Saint Basil Academy helped plant understory trees on the 1-acre grounds between the Sisters’ convent and Manor College. Susan Harris, a watershed specialist with the Montgomery County Conservation District, helped direct traffic. According to Harris, the tree-planting event is one component of a larger project happening on the campus. “Through this area, we’re establishing a ground cover,” Harris said. “In early April the area was leveled out and we covered it with top soil, put a native woodland seed-mix down and then put a biodegradable netting down …

17 Area High Schools Head to Quiz Bowl

Montgomery County Intermediate Unit hosts academic competition.

Are you ready to rumble? Montgomery County will be sending 17 different high schools to do just that, in an academic competition known as Quiz Bowl.  The annual Academic Competition will be held at the Spring-Ford Area High School auditorium, 350 South Lewis Road, Royersford, on Friday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 pm. "Each team will compete in matches, answering questions about Literature, American History, Contemporary Events, World History, Potpourri, and Science covering all time periods," said Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU) communicaitons director Kristen Rawlings. Wreck Glenside-Weldon?

The Abington School Board looks at the possibility of razing the school; it could cost as much as $2.1 million.

  It’s been a while since Abington students called the Glenside-Weldon building home. Its permanent students left in 2001 when nearby Copper-Beech Elementary School opened; the building then acted as a temporary home for students from several other schools, including some Springfield Township students. But now, the school serves mostly as a big storage closet for the district. The building could be on borrowed time. Last week, the Abington School Board entertained a feasibility study on demolishing the Easton Road building. The study also provided two options for parking lots. This township lags way behind in regards to youth sports and especially facilities for youth sports. If the township had any vision they would look around other neighboring townships they would know this. I suggest the township take the land and create a large Youth Sports Super Site.
