Abington Junior High Takes Second Place in Montco Middle School Envirothon

The Montgomery County Conservation District invited schools from around the county to participate in an annual competition that brings youth closer to nature.

The Montgomery County Conservation District held its annual Envirothon May 1 – 3, which featured student teams from several of the county’s elementary, middle and high schools; 18 schools in all, including Abington Junior High School. The Envirothon, which started state-wide in 1976, is designed to expose youth to nature through which they can relate how humans impact the natural world, while providing invaluable lessons for understanding ecosystems and our environment, according to the Envirothon website. Montgomery County’s Conservation District has three versions of the Envirothon, one for each school level. MCCC to Graduate Largest Class in History for 12th Consecutive Year

The Montgomery County Community College graduation will take place May 23, and the Keynote Address will be given by Drexel University President John Fry

Information courtesy of Montgomery County Community College With an increase of 38 percent over the last five years, the largest class in Montgomery County Community College (MCCC) history will graduate on May 23. The increase is a testament to MCCC’s efforts to improve student access, success and completion over the last decade.   A record total of 1,513 students will receive 1,535 associate’s degrees and certificates during the College’s 46th Commencement exercises, which will be held at MCCC’s Central Campus in Blue Bell starting at 7 p.m.   The ceremony will feature a keynote address by Drexel University President John A. Arcadia Holds Commencement for Graduate Students

Those going beyond bachelor walked Thursday evening at the Glenside University.

Arcadia University held its commencement ceremony for its graduate students early Thursday evening. Hundreds of students — representing schools ranging from education to science to the arts — marched onto the field to the sound of the university’s Festive Arts Ensemble. Many of the students had already officially gotten their degrees or certificates earlier. Arcadia University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Steve O. Michael made the introduction, and alumnus Elaine Thompson, President and CEO of Lakeland Regional Health Systems made the commencement address. Abington Curriculum Specialist to Leave for Centennial

Highland Elementary School’s Michael Johnson will leave to be an administrator.

  According to a Wednesday, May 15 post on the Centennial School District website,  the Centennial School Board appointed Highland’s Michael Johnson as principal of the district’s Klinger Middle School. The vote, on May 14, was unanimous; Johnson will start July 1. According to the post, the school’s interview team — which included Centennial School District faculty and school board members — visited Highland Elementary School, where Johnson is a curriculum specialist. "[The appointment] is the result of an extensive and thorough search process and I cannot imagine a better outcome for Klinger Middle School and Centennial School District," assistant superintendent Joyce Mundy said in the post. MCCC Names 62 Students from County to Who's Who List

Who’s Who Among American Junior Colleges welcomes several county residents to its famed list.

Sixty-two students from Montgomery County Community College’s Class of 2013 were named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. To qualify for Who’s Who, students must have graduated during the 2012-2013 academic year with a grade point average of at least 2.75 and must be nominated by a member of MCCC’s faculty or staff. This is NOT an "honor roll" where you only have to score a certain GPA. PSU Baseball Qualifies for Conference Tournament

With a record of 22-21, Penn State Abington’s baseball team earns a spot in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament.

Penn State Abington baseball has been selected to play in the ECAC South Tournament for the third consecutive season. The Nittany Lions, who are the No. 3 seed, will play No. 2 McDaniel College (21-15) on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Westminster, Md. This is the second consecutive year in which both teams have faced each other in the ECAC tournament. Last season, Abington defeated McDaniels 10-6 in the first round. The winner of Wednesday's game will continue its championship quest on Saturday at the higher seed. The four-team field includes: Semifinal – Wednesday Championship – Saturday (at higher seed)

Abington, Cheltenham Ranked on Newsweek's Best High Schools in America List

Abington HS was ranked 1152 out of 2,000 by Newsweek.

Newsweek released its list of the nation's top high schools, looking at student's college readiness and focusing on "graduation rates, participation in college-level classes via Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, and acceptance into a two- or four-year college program,"according to the report on The Daily Beast. Abington Senior High School, at 900 Highland Ave, Abington, was ranked 1152 out of 2,000 high schools across the country this year. According to the report, Abington has a 92% graduation rate, with 91% of graduates heading to a institution of higher education. The average SAT score for Abington students is 1577 and of the students that take AP tests, the average score earned is a 3.5. Cheltenham …

Abington Drumline Finishes Strongly in Wildwood

The squad was 1 of 10 to reach finals.

The Abington Drumline made it to the finals in last weekend’s Tournament Indoor Association’s (TIA) All-Chapter Championship in Wildwood, N.J. Out of 20 A-Class drumlines, Abington was 1 of 10 that made it to the finals. The Abington Drumline received a score of 88.8 at the finals competition on Saturday night, which netted an eighth-place finish.  Hatboro Horsham High School took first place in the A-Class drumline competition. The drumline's theme was "forever," which sampled many songs containing the word. Check out a video sample from last week’s practice at the high school in the video section above. PSU Softball Season Comes to an End

Penn State Abington's softball squad drops its second straight in the playoffs.

  Penn State Abington’s softball season ended Saturday after it suffered its second loss in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. The team lost to Wilson College by a score of 4-1 in the weekend’s first elimination game at Penn State Berks. The Nittany Lions, who lost on Friday to SUNYIT, did not score until the top of the sixth. Wilson scored in the bottom of first with an unearned run then had a three-run third inning. Two of the four runs were scored unearned as Abington committed two errors on the day. Abington managed to get on the bases with a pair of hits and walks in the first five innings, advancing the runners to third on all four scoring opportunities, but could not advance the runner to home.
