Sichel Recognized by [Different] Board

  The Montgomery County Commissioners recognized Abington School District Superintendent Amy Sichel Thursday for her recent election to the presidency of the American Association of School Administrators — the professional organization of more than 13,000 educational leaders. Sichel will be the first AASA president from Pennsylvania and only the fourth woman to be elected to this position in the organization’s 147 years, according to the Abington School District website. “As AASA president, I will be a strong advocate for superintendents and school administrators and for high quality public schools,” Sichel in an April 12 AASA press release. “We need to support reforms that improve educational opportunities for all students, promote …

Photos: MCCC Graduates Largest Class In School History

A total of 1,563 students received their degrees and certificates from Montgomery County Community College on Thursday evening.

Montgomery County Community College graduated their largest class in school history on Thursday evening, as family and friends packed the Blue Bell campus to see the1,563 students receive their degrees and certificates. The graduating class represents an increase of more than 18-percent from last year, which also includes the highest amount of west-campus graduates in a given year at 293. This year's class also boasted 11 Honors Program participants, 44 students with a 3.9 GPA or higher, and 49 foreign students from 23 countries. Keynote speaker William Truehart, who serves as president and CEO for "Achieving the Dream", spoke to students regarding the importance of a college education in our society, and Montgomery County Commissioner …

Queen of Angels Students Give Service to Get Unity

On their third and final Unity Day, the soon-to-be Queen of Angels School students give back to the community through various service projects.

  On the early morning of May 14, St. David and Our Lady Help of Christians (OLHC) students stood in a long line, waiting to help paint a mural. The mural depicts a brown cross in its center with a rainbow standing high in the background. Its colorful ends reach from one side of the mural to the other. At the top are the words: “Queen of Angels” – the name of the new Catholic regional school these students will soon call home. In helping to paint this large, canvas mural, each student took a turn having the palms of their hands painted a particular color; then marked the mural with their unique handprint. “So, it leaves a little piece of everybody,” Sarah Galbreadth, an OLHC parent, said with a smile. MCCC Live Streaming Tonight's Graduation Ceremony

If you can't make it to tonight's MCCC graduation ceremony, you can watch live from your computer or mobile device.

Tonight, Montgomery County Community College will graduate its largest class in the school’s history tonight at 7 p.m. at the Central Campus in Blue Bell. The College is warning students and guests that traffic around the college can get extremely congested and to allow for extra travel time to get to the campus. If you cannot make it to the campus for graduation, the College is live streaming the event beginning at 6:30 p.m. on their website. To view the live webcast of the MCCC graduation, click here.

Abington’s Crescendudes Make Their Rounds

The group with the cheeky name hit up all the elementary schools in an effort to spread the love of music.

  As a service learning project, and in order to promote the music program and to entertain fifth and sixth graders,The Crescendudes, Abington's male a capella Group, recently performed at all seven Abington elementary schools. The group comprises students who participate in activities ranging from sports to student government to learning. The Crescendudes performed short concerts for the children; the group expressed the importance of music and urged the students to pursue music beyond elementary school. Abington Earns Silver from 'U.S. News and World Report'

Though it didn't crack the 'top 1,000,' Abington High School is ranked 31st in Pennsylvania.

  Earlier today, U.S. News and World Report released its rankings of the best high schools in the country. Not surprisingly, Abington Senior High School got a nod. Abington ranks in at 1,352 nationally out of about 21,800 high schools; the high school ranks 31st in Pennsylvania. Nearby Jenkintown Middle/High School ranked in at 38th statewide and 1,544 nationally. According to the U.S. News and World Report website, the agency partnered with the Washington, D.C.-based American Institutes for Research to determine the rankings. They are based on state assessments, college readiness and students’ success in Advanced Placement programs. This is the fourth edition of the rankings.  See the full methodology here. Pics: Oxholm Installed

Arcadia University inaugurated its 20th president earlier this week.

  Carl Tobey Oxholm III will take the controls of the university in Glenside. He was intalled in a ceremony at the university on Saturday.  According to a press release, Oxholm started his legal career in Philadelphia and worked with the Philadelphia Solicitor’s Office. He also worked at Drexel University, where he led the acquisition of MCP Hahnemann University and the creation of Drexel Law. Temple Ambler and the Center for Sustainable Communities welcomed schools and groups from the Ambler and Philadelphia region Friday to learn about being green.  Exhibitors on Friday included the Academy of Natural Sciences, Sesame Place, Elmwood Park Zoo, Wondergy, and more. More than 90 exhibitors, ranging from nonprofits to businesses and school groups, presented ideas, projects and initiatives. The Philadelphia Horitcultural Society also held its ninth annual Junior Flower Show at EarthFest, which gives students a way to express themselves through the natural world.

Arcadia U. to Hold Inauguration

Arcadia University will install its 20th President

  Carl Tobey Oxholm III will be inaugurated as Arcadia University’s 20th president today at 3 p.m. in the Kuch Center Alumni Gymnasium. Arcadia University Board Chairwoman Margaret Wright Steele, Class of 1980, will conduct the installation and will present him with the Presidential Chain of Office. The event may be watched live at www.arcadia.edu/inauguration. U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter will be in attendance. Kings of the Castle

The Abington Senior High School chess team cleans up in Minneapolis.

  The Abington School Board honored the Abington Senior High School Chess team at its meeting earlier this week. The chess team won this year’s Under 1200 National Title Chess Championship in Minneapolis. The tournament took place April 13, 14 and 15. The team includes: Giguere is the 2011 State Champion in the Under 1300 bracket; Goldsborough placed eighth at Nationals in the Under 1200 bracket; Kruger placed 18th at Nationals in the Under 1200 bracket; Klasky finished 30th at Nationals in the Under 1200 bracket; and McLaughlin placed 30th in the unrated section.
