Howard Levey, Former Willow Grove Resident and World War II Vet

Levey's funeral service will be Saturday.

Howard Levey, widower of Doris (DeWald) Levey, died Monday, May 20. He was 93. Levey was the son of the late Lewis and Elizabeth (Schultz) Levey. He was raised in the Tacony and the Mayfair sections of Philadelphia.  Levey worked at Benxdix Aviation, where he met his wife. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army-Air Force and was kept stateside during World War II; he was sent to Will Rogers Field and then to Boston. Following the war, Levey and his wife moved to Willow Grove and worked in the heating and air conditioning field. He was a member of the Deep Run Presbyterian Church. Abington Man Arrested for Allegedly Carrying Gun Without License

The man also had a loaded magazine, police said.

  Abington Police arrested a Roslyn man following a traffic stop after he was found to have a semi-automatic gun and a loaded clip in his shorts pocket, police said. Alexander Young, 21, of Norwood Road, was arrested and charged with carrying a firearm without a license on May 15 following a traffic stop near the corner of Highland and Woodland avenues. According to police, Young was driving a gold Chevrolet S-10 and did not use a turn signal. Young was driving with a suspended license, police said. Following a pat down, police recovered a black, semi-automatic Sig Sauer P250 in Young’s pocket, as well as a loaded magazine, which contained 15 9-mm rounds. Recycling Center to Host Rabies Clinic

The Montgomery County Health Department will hold rabies vaccination clinics for dogs, cats and ferrets throughout the month of June.

The Montgomery County Health Department will hold a Rabies Clinic at the Abington Recycling Center, located at 2201 Florey Lane (off of Easton Road) in Abington, from 9 – 11 a.m., June 1. The clinic is for dogs, cats and ferrets, and costs $10 per shot. According to the County’s website, each rabies vaccination lasts for a three-year period. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals, which can be received through the bite of a rabid animal. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system, which leads to brain disease and death. My car’s rear seats don’t fold down. They did on my previous car, which was a coupe version of my current car, but my car’s first owner didn’t pony up the money for the cold-weather package … so now I’m stuck with a small trunk and no headlamp washers.  First world problems, I know. And because my seats don’t fold down, whenever I want to go skiing, or surfing, or just carry a long stick in my vehicle, I’ve got to run to my mother. She drives a 2001 Toyota RAV4. It’s cavernous, can plow through 2 feet of snow with its gas-guzzling, always-on 4-wheel drive system and 70-series tires, and is probably the slowest vehicle I’ve ever driven. Whoa, Jack. This is a tongue-in-cheek piece meant to say that the Toyota corporation, and its subsidiaries, don't have an iconic, supercar anymore. Cheltenham Art Center to Hold Figure Drawing Open Studio

The event will feature two models.

  The Cheltenham Center for the Arts will hold a figure drawing open studio event Saturday, May 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Colleen Hammond will be the guest moderator. Hammond, who paints in oil, showcased her Artist in Residence exhibit last year at the art center with “The Portrait Project, One Hundred Oil Paintings, 2011-2012.” More on the exhibit here. The event will give artists the opportunity to work from a nude model to improve their drawing skills. Poses will start at 2 to 3 minutes and will extend to about 20 minutes. This is a monitored class but instruction will be available on request.  The cost for the class is $15. -- The Cheltenham Art Center is located at 439 Ashbourne Road.

Abington Properties Up For Sheriff's Sale

Hundreds of properties in Montgomery County, including several in Abington, will be on the block for the monthly sheriff's sale.

More than 500 properties are on the list for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Sale on May 29, including 10 in Abington. The sale starts at 1 p.m. in Court Room A at the Montgomery County Court House in Norristown. Each buyer must have a minimum total bid available for each property to sell, and the winning bidder must have 10 percent of the sale price at the auction; the remaining portion is due within ten days of the sale.
