PSU Abington V-Ball Wins Fifth Straight

The Lady Lions win 15 consecutive sets, and five in a row for the first time.

 

Baltimore, Md. – The Penn State Abington Lady Lions volleyball team last night knocked off Notre Dame of Maryland University in straight-sets 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-19) and had numerous players contribute to the win. The win marked the first time in the program’s history that the volleyball team has won five straight matches. In addition, the wins also marked the first time that Abington has won 15 consecutive sets. The team improved 6-2 on the season heading into North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play this weekend.

Freshman hitter Abby Millan of El Paso, Texas, tallied 11 kills in the match to pace the Lady Lions offense and added an assist and also hit .474 percent. Leah Brown, of Southampton, followed closely behind with 15 assists along with teammates Kate Schalck, of Warminster, and Johangelie Thomas, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, adding nine and four kills, respectively. Schalck added a career high of nine kills.

Leading the defense for Abington was senior libero Krysten Boyd of Philadelphia. Boyd racked up 11 digs in the match and also chipped in with a kill and two assists. Thomas and Brown helped keep the Gators’ offense at bay with eight and five digs, respectively. As a team, the Lady Lions defense had a total of 30 digs to go along with tough serving and nine service aces.

The Lady Lions will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday as they take on SUNYIT in their first match of a three match weekend at the NEAC Crossover in Aurora, N.Y. The three matches will be the first conference contests for Abington in the 2012 season.
