Penn State Abington Runners Honored for Third Consecutive Week

The two cross-country runners were each named Student-Athlete of the Week by the NEAC.

The North Eastern Athletic Conference announced two Penn State Abington cross-country runners as Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Oct. 20.

Alexander Kane, of Doylestown, and Evan Quinones of SUNY Cobleskill were both chosen as the Co-NEAC Men's Cross Country Runners of the Week after each had top performances for their respective teams.

Kane, a sophomore at Penn State Abington, won his third straight event after taking first place at the Albright College Invitational on Saturday.  Kane finished the 5.5-mile course in 30:29, shattering the course record, to best the rest of the field by at least 20 seconds and captured his fifth first-place finish of the season. The performance helped the Nittany Lions finish in first place out of the four-team field. This is the third week in a row that Kane has garnered this honor. Kane is a Central Bucks East High School alumnus.

Valerie Santangelo, of Abington, has once again been named the NEAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week.

The Penn State Abington freshman won her third straight event and fifth of the season after taking first place at the 3.5-mile course of the Albright College Invitational on Saturday with a finish time of 21:45 for a new course record.  The end time was at least 27 seconds faster than the rest of the 42-runner field and helped the Nittany Lions take second place out of the seven-team field, finishing behind only Division II Caldwell College. This is the third week in a row that the freshman runner has garnered this honor. Santangelo is a St. Basil Academy graduate.
