Penn State Abington Has New All-Time Scoring Leader

Senior shooting guard Trish Watson, of Bensalem, made history on Saturday afternoon becoming the Penn State Abington women's basketball all-time scoring leader as the Lady Lions tamed the Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill, 85-43. The win also marked the first time Abington defeated SUNY Cobleskill (0-2 NEAC, 1-7) since both teams joined the North Eastern Athletic Conference in 2008 as the Lady Lions improved to 2-0 in the conference and 4-5 on the season. 

The Lady Lions opened the first half as both teams traded baskets twice before a jumper from junior Janay Winston at 16:07 sparked a 28-0 run. The defense was crucial forcing 10 turnovers to open the game and holding the Fighting Tigers scoreless for more than ten minutes.

At 13:21 Watson kept the scoring spree alive during the run with steal off to make a layup off a fastbreak, which gave her 1,159 career points making her the program's all-time career scoring leader in just 79 games played.

Abington continued to heat up as the first half wound down with sophomore Jessica Schmidt scoring back-to-back layups with less a minute remaining as the Lady Lions led 50-16 at the half.

The Lady Lions shot 62.5 percent in the first half and outrebounded the Fighting Tigers 23-15, forcing 13 turnovers and 23.1 percent shooting from the floor.

The second half started much like the first with the Lady Lions taking a quick lead on a 8-0 run. 

Cobleskill continued to fight, but every time the Fighting Tigers gained momentum, the Lady Lions knocked them back to keep Cobleskill at bay. The Fighting Tigers would not come within 38 as they tried to get back in it as Abington held on for the 85-43 victory.

Watson led the way with 28 points (10-for-15) and a career-high 11 assists, recording her first double-double of the season. Schmidt tallied her fifth double-double of the season adding 21 points (10-for-13) and a career-high in rebounds in a game with 19. Winston pitched in with 19 points and seven rebounds.

Abington edged Cobleskill in rebounds, 48-35, forced 20 turnovers and shot 53.8 percent from the field.

Kady Poterfield led the way for Cobleskill with 15 points as the Fighting Tigers shot 26.7 percent from the field.
