More Awards for PSU Abington’s Forward

The sophomore basketball player from Horsham keeps raking in the accolades.

Penn State Abington basketball player Mike Marvin earned yet another award yesterday.

The Philadelphia Area Small College Basketball Association awarded the star forward the Sam Cozen Player of the Week Award at a luncheon. The Cozen award is bestowed upon a local basketball player who has excelled in his pursuits on the hard-court, and recipients are nominated and voted upon by a selection of the area’s college and university basketball coaches at several points over the season.

Marvin’s play throughout the season has been exceptional, but his past two weeks have been particularly noteworthy. The 6-foot-5 forward got Penn State Abington’s current five-game winning streak off to a strong start with an 18-point, 21-rebound performance in a 72-71 victory over Wells College on Jan. 19.

Then, Marvin was named the North Eastern Atlantic Conference (NEAC) Player of the Week and ECAC Division III Player of the Week for his performance during the week of Jan. 21-27. Marvin backed up the Wells performance with 22-point and 19-point games against Lancaster Bible and Gallaudet, respectively. In the Gallaudet affair, Marvin sank the game winning jumper with seven seconds left, and then closed the game out by deflecting the Bison’s last-ditch inbounds pass, preserving the 66-64 victory.

The forward then put together what might have been his finest performance to this point in the season. Marvin put up a season-high 29 points, one short of his career high, and pulled down 21 rebounds in the 113-105 double overtime victory for the Nittany Lions over rival Penn State Harrisburg. To finish the five-game stretch, Marvin put up his 15th double-double of the season to help Penn State Abington earn a 67-63 victory on the road at Keuka College.

As of Jan. 31, Marvin sat at 37th in the entire Division III landscape in scoring, averaging 19.7 points per game. As of Jan. 31, he was third in the nation with 12.9 rebounds per game, and tied for second for the total number of double-doubles this season with 14.

Fans will have their next chance to congratulate Marvin on his achievements and cheer him on when the Nittany Lions take on Penn State Berks tonight at Abington. Game time is 8 p.m.

The night’s men’s and women’s games are “Pink Zone” games to benefit the Pennsylvania Pink Zone, which promotes cancer awareness and empowers survivors through fund-raising for cancer organizations, charities, and facilities.
