MCIU To Broaden Communication Efforts

Social media and newsletters to help intermediate unit reach out to the public

Having recently established itself on social media networks like Facebook and Twitter, the communications division of the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit has made it clear that its looking to strengthen its community outreach efforts.

Kristen Rawlings, who serves as the communications director for the MCIU, recently met with the Superintendent Task Force on Communications to discuss new initiatives that could streamline county-wide communications.

"As a result of our meeting, all 21 school districts are participating in the development of a county-wide newsletter," Rawlings said during the monthly meeting of the MCIU.  "[The newsletter] is intended to be very flexible."

The newsletter will feature information on a wide variety of applicable issues for the school districts within Montgomery County, and Rawlings added that individual school districts may insert the county-wide articles into their own publications as they see necessary.

The goal is to better notify the public and the school districts on everything from student and school achievements to education issues that may require action or discussion.

While community notification and outreach is one aspect of the communications division, it also offers many additional services to area public and non-public schools, such as publication development, media relations, strategic communications planning and website content development.

"The communications division is responsible for supporting the internal and external communications of the MCIU, as well as supporting school districts and non-public schools with communications services upon request," Rawlings said.  "All of these services are provided to the districts at a lower cost than their previous contracts with for-profit public relations agencies, freelancers or the cost of employing a full-time communications coordinator."

As an example, Rawlings pointed out that her division writes and designs a quarterly parent-and-community newsletter for Pottsgrove School District, and it also handles the districts calendar design.
