Abington School Board to Hold Public Hearing on Glenside-Weldon

The hearing is one of many steps recently outlined by the school district regarding the demolition of the former elementary school.

Late last month, Abington School District officials laid out a timeline regarding the preposed demolition of the since-replaced, and now-defunct Glenside-Weldon Elementary School on Easton Road. Officials outlined steps the district has taken in the past regarding the school’s closure and presented a proposed timeline for razing the building.

Tonight, the school board will hold a public hearing at the school district administration building on Highland Avenue at 7:30 p.m. Abington Superintendent Amy Sichel said the school district’s solicitor will be in attendance.

Check out the timeline on Abington Patch here.

Should the timeline stay as-is, the district is looking at a three-phase project — starting April 23 with preliminary demolition and ending in September 2014 with the construction of a new athletic field and the restoration of the site.

Early next week, the school district will likely begin preparing plans and specifications for the demolition and site design; it will likely award contracts for an asbestos consultant and a fuel tank consultant before November.
