Lansdale Opposes Renaming of PA Turnpike Exit

Lansdale Borough Council will lobby Harrisburg to prevent a proposed name change by Towamencin Township of the Lansdale Pennsylvania Turnpike exit from Lansdale to Kulpsville

Towamencin Township Supervisors plan to ask the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to change the name of the Lansdale interchange of Interstate 476 to Kulpsville.

Lansdale Borough says not so fast.

According to The Reporter Online, Towamencin Township Supervisors Chairman Dan Littley said supervisors expect the PTC to agree with the request and revert the name back to Kulpsville as it was up until the late 1970s.

Littley was quoted in The Reporter as such:

“Too many officials come to this community and welcome everyone to Lansdale. We are not Lansdale.”

At the June 20 Lansdale Borough Council meeting, councilman Jack Hansen proposed a vote for the borough to lobby Harrisburg to prevent the name change.

Council then voted unanimously to do just that.

"Lansdale is becoming a destination. We are in the middle of revitalization. People know where Lansdale is because they see it on the map with the interchange of the turnpike," Hansen said. "I move that borough council and the borough manager lobby our representatives in Harrisburg to maintain the name of Lansdale."

The motion was seconded by councilman Dan Dunigan.

"Why not?" he said.

Council President Matt West liked the idea proposed by Hansen.

"I fully support that," West said.

Littley said he had no comment until he sees Lansdale's resolution.

Why in the world is this Evan an issue? Everyone knows this as the Lansdale exit. Why cause confusion? Please, please, PLEASE don't call it North Penn. I work in the area and deal with a lot of outside truck drivers. I'm constantly being asked if North Penn is a direction (the opposite of South Penn). I am constantly explaining that North Penn is the area not the direction, lolol.

The name of the exit is not always the 'largest town' nearby. Case in point, the Mahoning Valley exit. It references the Mahoning Creek, which isn't exactly accurate since it also includes the Lehigh River valley and the Pohopoco Creek valley. Same holds true for the Pocono exit. So why not change the Lansdale exit to Towamencin? It only matters if someone cares.

Quakertown should be the Milford Exit

Since the turnpike exit has always been known as the Lansdale exit, changing the name to anything else would be confusing to travellers. If this is an issue with residents, I suggest adding both ‘Towamencin’ and ‘Kulpsville’ to the existing sign. The addition would give more information instead of causing confusion by taking ‘Lansdale’ down. That is sure to please everyone.
