Dean Issues Statement on Transportation Bill

State Rep. Madeleine Dean explains why she voted for the new Pennsylvania transportation bill.

State Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-153, voted in favor of the $2.4 billion transportation bill that passed the Pennsylvania House on Thursday and was signed into law on Monday; Dean said the bill provided “much-needed investments in crumbling roads and bridges, mass transit and multi-modal transportation.”

“I voted for the transportation package because it will repair our roads and bridges, both statewide and right here in Abington and Upper Dublin, “ Dean said. “In addition to creating thousands of jobs, this bill passed not just in a moment of need, but a moment of priorities, because our roads, bridges, mass transit and highways are the drivers of innovation, the drivers of education, and the drivers of our future.”

Dean also said the bill would provide dedicated funding for bikable and walkable communities.

Statewide, Dean said the $2.4 billion transportation plan would:
  • Boost economic output by $6.5 billion,
  • Create and sustain 50,000 new jobs with added payroll of $2 billion
  • Increase net economic output by $3.3 billion, and
  • Create an additional $1.1 billion output and 4,000 jobs in the important manufacturing sector.

“This legislation is a victory for Pennsylvania,” Dean said. “John F. Kennedy said: ‘Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer.’ Let us hope with this transportation bill that we have found the right answer for Pennsylvania.”
