Abington Board to Hear Wawa Application Tonight

The Abington Board of Commissioners will hear a zoning ordinance amendment linked to the development of a Wawa in the 800 block of Old York Road tonight at 7:30 p.m.

It's sizing up to be quite a meeting, so get to the township building early.

Tonight, the Abington Board of Commissioners will consider a zoning ordinance amendment filed by Provco Goodman Jenkintown, L.P. which would essentially get the ball rolling on the development of a Wawa store and fueling station in the 800 block of Old York Road, near Baeder and Hilltop roads. The property is now vacant (though someone is selling Christmas trees on the site).

The planning commission, which is an advisory council, voted last month to reject the amendment by a vote of 5-4.

Planning commission board members Catherine Gauthier, Ronald Rosen, Charles Carter, Lucy Strackhouse and David Good voted to reject the ordinance.

Many residents are against the proposed Wawa and many of them are showing their disdain for the proposed convenience store/gas station by putting anti-Wawa lawn signs on their property. At prior meetings, many residents voiced concern over the potential of increased traffic in the area. Some residents are not happy about the fact that the Wawa will be open 24/7.

The special meeting will happen tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the township building.
