'Pilot-ing' Through Walgreens

Driver error likely caused the crash at Walgreens on The Fairway.

No one was seriously injured in a crash at last week.

It wasn’t a crash near the pharmacy in the corner of Old York Road and The Fairway, it was a crash into the store.

According to an Abington Police incident report, a Jenkintown woman driving a black Honda Pilot crashed into the glass door entrance of the pharmacy on Aug. 21 at about 9:15 p.m. When police arrived, the Pilot was completely in the store — near aisles three and four.

The driver’s sister was sitting in the passenger seat at the time of the crash.

According to the report, the driver said she was attempting to pull into a handicapped parking spot in front of the store, but she “believed she was putting her foot onto the brake pedal, but the vehicle continued forward …”

Both the driver and the passenger “appeared normal” following the crash; the sister stepped on some broken glass as she exited the vehicle, cutting her foot, and was taken to Abington Memorial Hospital by the Second Alarmers.

Police were able to remove the Pilot from the store by driving it out. According to the report, the vehicle “did not appear to having any mechanical issue.” A tow truck driver from Abington Auto said the vehicle’s brakes were working.

It does not appear that the driver was cited.

The pharmacy is open, though as of Tuesday there was plywood covering up part of the entrance.
