Two Abington Post Office Employees Allegedly Steal Credit Card Info

The two Abington Post Office clerks stole credit card info from customers and bought gift cards, police say.

On Thursday, two Abington Post Office Clerks were charged with theft, criminal conspiracy and related charges for allegedly stealing credit card info from post office customers.

According to Abington Police, Rashaad Calif Schell, 23; and Daryl Matthews, 24, both of Philadelphia, stole credit card numbers from customers by placing a smart phone on the counter and setting it to record. As a customer would hand over a credit card, Matthews and Schell would quickly hold it over the phone and record the numbers.

The credit card info was then used to buy merchandise, ranging from American Express gift cards to tickets to Great Adventure, police said.

In June, Abington Police investigated three cases where American Express gift cards were ordered using three different Abington residents' credit card accounts without the residents' knowledge. According to police, the gift cards — which were for varying amounts between $1,000 and $2,000 — were delivered to each card owner’s home via UPS.

During two of the deliveries, a man appeared outside the delivery address, and in one case, attempted to claim he was the homeowner. It didn’t work, police said, and UPS did not give him the package. In another case, a man told the homeowner that he worked for UPS, and told the homeowner that he was there to pick up a package that had been delivered by mistake. Again, the homeowner did not give up the package.

According to police, an investigation revealed that in all three instances, the complainants had previously used their credit cards at the Abington Post Office.

There is no indication that any other post office employees are involved in the scheme, but, according to police, there are at least 20 additional victims who may have had their credit card accounts compromised.

Schell and Matthews were arraigned Thursday in front of District Justice John Kessler; neither appears to have a criminal history.

The defendants’ preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 13 at 9:45 a.m.
