Speeding Leads to Felony Drug Bust, Abington Police Say

The stop yields a gun, drugs and $15K.

Abington Police late last month stopped a Bala Cynwyd man for allegedly speeding, but he got more than a citation.

Elihue Perdue, 32, of the unit block of Montgomery Avenue, was arrested June 20 at about 6:30 p.m. after he was seen driving 55 mph in a 35 mph zone in a Chevrolet Camaro on Moreland Road near Park Avenue, police said.

According to police, the vehicle, which had at least 10 air fresheners dangling next to the steering wheel, smelled of raw marijuana. When asked if Perdue had ever been arrested, police said Perdue started sweating and his carotid artery started throbbing.

A search of the cabin of the Camaro yielded some loose marijuana buds on the rear floor behind the driver’s seat, and more than $15,100, which was in a brown paper bag on the rear passenger seat, as well as $200 from the center console, police said.

Near the spare tire well in the trunk, police found a blue plastic bag, which contained several bags of suspected marijuana, a Smith and Wesson .40-caliber gun loaded with six hollow point bullets, more than 260 pills, a scale and a bag of an unknown pink crystallized rock substance, according to the report.

When police attempted to arrest Perdue, he allegedly fled on foot; police attempted to taze Perdue but missed. He was ultimately stopped in the parking lot near Barnes and Noble on Moreland Road.

Perdue, who had a probation violation warrant out of New Jersey, was charged with felony possession with intent to deliver, firearms violations, resisting arrest and related charges.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 14 at 10:30 a.m. in front of District Justice John Kessler.
