Phils Hat Robber May be Linked to Philly Incident

The man allegedly robbed a bank in Abington last Saturday.

Abington Police Deputy Chief John Livingood said the man who held up a bank last Saturday may be linked to a bank robbery in Philadelphia.

While police have yet to capture the man who allegedly robbed a PNC bank on Old York Road on Saturday, Livingood said Abington Police is working the investigation with the FBI.

“Typically we notify the FBI [following a bank robbery], and sometimes they respond, and we share information with them,” Livingood said. “We’re looking into other bank robberies in the area, and there’s a good chance the guy who has robbed banks in the city over the course of the year could be our guy.”

Livingood said there is also a serial bank robber who has hit up banks in the Chestnut Hill section of the city, but added that he doesn’t believe it is the man who robbed the Abington PNC.

According to police, the man robbed the PNC bank at 123 Old York Road in the Jenkintown section of Abington at about 11:35 a.m. on Saturday. The man allegedly handed the bank clerk a blue bag and a note indicating that he had a gun. It also said to, "give me the money,” police said.

The teller put an undisclosed amount of cash in the provided bag and the alleged robber fled on foot, police said.

The man is described as brown-skinned, about 6-feet tall with a husky build. He was last seen wearing a mustard-colored Carhartt type coat and a burgundy-colored Phillies baseball cap.
