Dresher Man Arrested for Glove Box Gun

A Dresher man was arrested in Abington for having a loaded gun in his glove box.

Abington Police arrested Edward Francis Bennis, 29, of Thrush Drive, Dresher, Jan. 10 at 11:51 p.m. following a traffic stop.

Bennis was driving faster than 50 mph while he was headed eastbound on Jenkintown Road, where the speed limit is 35 mph, police said. The stop happened near the corner of Tyson and Fairhill avenues.

According to police Bennis' license was DUI-suspended and Bennis had a .40-cal. Smith & Wesson handgun in the glove box of his vehicle. The weapon was loaded with 13 rounds of PPU 40 hollow point bullets. Bennis does not have a license to carry a firearm, police said.

Bennis was also arrested in March 2010 in Abington for DUI and arrested in Abington in 2006 for drug possession. Bennis was arrested in Upper Dublin for simple assault last February, though the charges were dropped.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 8 at 1 p.m. in front of District Justice Juanita Price.
